Can Farming Heal Ecosystems & Restore Wildlife?
|

Dear Climate Changemaker,
Industrial agriculture has degraded ecosystems—eroding soils, driving biodiversity loss, and destabilizing the climate. But emerging research and on-the-ground practice show another way forward.
A 2021 study led by Jonathan Lundgren defined regenerative farming systems that work with nature—diverse crops, cover crops, minimal chemicals, and reintegrated livestock. These farms consistently support higher biodiversity, from pollinators to predators, while maintaining yields. Healthy soils then act as carbon sinks, regulate water, and create habitat corridors for wildlife recovery.
Alejandro Carrillo, a fourth-generation rancher in Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert, puts Lundgren's research into practice. By mimicking natural grazing rhythms at his family’s Las Damas Cattle Ranch, he’s restored soils, revived native grasses, and created thriving habitat for desert turtles, mountain lions, black bears, javelinas, and even migratory birds. Conservationists call his land “among the healthiest in the desert.”
Carrillo’s success—alongside Lundgren’s research—proves that regenerative agriculture is not only a food system strategy, but a wildlife restoration and climate mitigation solution.
Both Lundgren and Carrillo will join us in our upcoming Wildlife & Climate course. |

Praise for Instructor Hart Hagan
“Hart Hagan's 12 week course on Healing Our Land & Our Climate managed to be both an unsentimental survey of the myriad ways we are badly wounding our living world and the insufficiency of many of the proposed "solutions" to this crisis, and an inspiring and thought-provoking exploration of how we can ourselves create and advocate for a vibrant, restored world full of life. He is a fine teacher, with an easygoing, approachable style, and great skill in asking incisive questions, which I deeply appreciated. I came out of his sessions with a perspective on the climate crisis that I did not quite have before, and it was a genuine joy to learn new things. I was sad when the course came to an end, and happy to learn that he would be hosting additional classes in the near future.”
