Prevailing Wildfire Myths. Tuesday, October 28 at 7:00 (Eastern Time)

What if most of what you heard or read about wildfires turned out to be untrue? Sadly, this is the case.

The news media, government and the “”scientific” literature are dominated by timber industry mythology and creative half truths about what our forests need and how to protect our communities from the threat of wildfire.

We are also treated to persistent falsehoods about the costs and benefits of natural fire, sometimes called “catastrophic” wildfires.

Did you know? Some of the most biologically diverse forests are those that have experienced patches of high intensity wildfires. They are not to be dreaded, but to be embraced. The task is to protect people and communities and stop trying to protect the forest from wildfires.

The way to protect people and communities is not to waste valuable resources fighting fires in the wildlands. The way to protect people and communities is to make buildings fireproof and then provide evacuation planning and assistance, all of which is cheaper and more effective than the heroic efforts to fight fires wherever they occur, including on land far removed from homes and communities.

These are some of the issues we will discuss.
