SUSAN FISCHER ORDAINED AS PRIEST

Susan Fischer completed her journey as a transitional deacon as the Rt. Rev. Scott B. Hayashi ordained her to the Sacred Order of Priests on June 18th. The setting was St. Peter's in Clearfield, where she has been serving the past year. She is also serving as a chaplain and is expected to continue in both congregational and chaplaincy roles in the Diocese of Utah. Her chaplaincy work is continuing for Salt Lake Behavioral Health, St. Mark's Tower, and St. Mark's Millcreek. She will move from St. Peter's to St. Paul's in Salt

The Rev. Claudia Seiter of St. Peter's has mentored the Rev. Susan Fischer during her transitional time and wrote, "In that time, she won the hearts of the members of this parish. I know that it will be difficult for us to let her go on to the ministries she has been called to, but we shall continue to be grateful for the gifts she has shared with us and the joy she has given to the parish with her presence and talents.

ST. MARK'S CONGREGATION PREVIEWS NEW ORGAN

Members of the Cathedral Church of St. Mark got a glimpse of the new organ which will feature 2,250 pipes. The giant instrument

is in the last portion of its two-year build time. When it is installed in the Cathedral and voiced, it will have consumed 18,000 hours of labor. The M. L. Bigelow organ builders are crafting the large white oak instrument in their headquarters in American Fork. They have named it Opus 35, meaning it is the 35th organ built by the world famous company.

Bigalow crafts people will disassemble the instrument and reassemble it in the Cathedral by Advent 2011.

The organ is requiring a new loft to be built in the Cathedral. The project was started by the former Dean of the Cathedral, the Very Rev. Rick Lawson, who wished to also uncover the rose window that was hidden behind the old organ. Dean Emeritus Lawson also envisioned the restoration of the Cathedral to an acoustically masterful place with wooden floors instead of carpeting.

Senior Warden Carolyn Roll announced to the congregation June 26th that the green carpet will be taken up and the hardwood floor would be refinished as part of the construction project. Additionally, the entire Cathedral will be repainted

and two exterior walls will have the sandstone repointed. A donor has offered to give those gifts to the congregation and the Vestry unanimously accepted them with gratitude. Bishop Hayashi also gave his blessing for the project.

Warden Roll also announced that services will be relocated to the Deans Hall in the Cathedral Center during the last several months of construction. However, she also announced that the 8:00 services will take place in the chapel, which is located in the upper corner of the nave. This will keep the service record going of nearly 140 years of services at the Cathedral making St. Mark's the oldest continuously operating church building in Utah, never missing a Sunday. In the 1930's, the church conducted worship services in the environs, despite a fire that had destroyed the chancel.

st. james
St. Jame's in Midvale will host this year's Diocesan Convention
Diocesan Convention Website Launched... Deadlines approaching!

The Diocesan Convention isn't until October 14th and 15th, but nominations and resolutions are due August 15th in order to be ready for regional meetings. We will have elections for Standing Committee, Diocesan Council (at-large and regional representatives), and the Treasurer's position.

This year, the nomination and resolution forms are online at the Diocesan Convention website,

www.diocesanconvention-ut.org

The forms are to be downloaded (or opened) and filled out on your computer using Adobe Acrobat. The process is similar to virtually all other online forms you may have filled out. Many computers already have Adobe Acrobat. If you don't, you can get a free download of the program at:

www.adobe.com

Upon completion, merely hit the submit button at the bottom and the forms are emailed to Craig Wirth at the Diocese to be assembled on the convention website. You will need to also email an electronic photo of yourself to: cwi...@episcopal-ut.org.

If you need a computer, you may use your church's computer. If you need any assistance, please call Craig Wirth at 801 322 4131 to be "walked through" the process.

We are using the online form process for many reasons. It is an environmentally green process, it saves the costs of paper, ink, and mailing, it saves considerable time for congregations and diocesan staffs, it offers a quick and efficient method to post on the web, and perhaps most importantly, it gives a uniform and unbiased look to all candidates profiles--rather than favoring those who had the best penmanship and perhaps the computer skills to attractively scan the past forms and print them out on expensive printers.

This year's convention will be held at St. James in Midvale and marks the return to a two-day convention. The Rt. Rev. Scott B. Hayashi says his first convention as Bishop, will feature workshops, business meetings, fellowship, worship and FUN.

DON'T FORGET CAMP!!!!

The Diocese of Utah offers one of America's great mountain camps for children of all faiths. You can link to the camp website with the latest information on our diocesan website: www.episcopal-ut.org

The Rt. Rev. Scott B. Hayashi has commissioned the camp staff members to "lift us and serve God" as they do a very holy work. Bishop Hayashi says dioceses often have two cathedrals. One is an indoor cathedral and the other an outdoor cathedral. Camp Tuttle is our outdoor cathedral. To view the commissioning, you can link the video from our diocesan website home page, or you may

The Rev. Jessica Hatch
The Rev. Jessica Hatch gave her goodbye sermon to the congregation at St. Mary's of Provo on June 26th. Bishop Hayashi and representatives from other faith traditions joined the congregation in saying farewell. She remarked, "No one could wish for a more loving, heartfelt send-off by colleagues and congregation."
The now retired priest has been part of the Diocese of Utah as an interim, priest in charge and diocesan staff member who headed Episcopal Community Services, founded the Open Book Store and started the Living Boldly e-newsletter.

Bishop Hayashi has announced that the Rev. Peter Van Hook will assume the priest in charge position at St. Mary's in September. He has been a priest in the Diocese of Utah since 1981 and has served as Rector of All Saints and several interim positions including his latest service as the interim at Good Shepherd of Ogden. Good Shepherd is in the final stages of a search to call a new rector. The Rev. Trace Browning, chaplain at Rowland Hall School, will supply Good Shepherd in the meantime. Additionally, the Rev. Michael Milligan will supply St. Mary's until the Rev. Peter Van Hook starts his new position. The Rev. Michael Milligan retired from Church of the Resurrection in Centerville and has been assisting at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark.

Church Leadership to Parade Leadership

Diocesan Council member George Young of St. Barnabas in Tooele is skilled in helping lead our diocese. Perhaps those same skills and a horse will help him lead the July 4th parade in Tooele. He is the Grand Marshall of the parade in recognition to his longtime service to Tooele County.
The Tooele Transcript profiled George, who will be waving hello to hundreds on the big holiday. The article can be found by CLICKING HERE.

Springer joins other priests, several bishops, seminary faculty, and lay leaders on the foundation board.
