Hi all,

Writing to introduce an internship opportunity. Please circulate in your networks.

Looking for a good Data Analysis internship? Well undergraduates, here is your chance. MERGE offers you an internship opportunity that'll help you understand development models better by interacting with senior officials and by working under a highly qualified mentor.

CONCEPT NOTE
Interns will be assisting with a research project that compares development models of different Indian states. It is based on a mix of quantitative analysis of state-level government budgets (collected from RBI), political coalitions, interviews with politicians and civil servants, and archival and secondary sources. The research project adopts a comparative historical analysis of six states, to argue that understanding variation across developmental regimes requires an exploration of the class and ethnic backgrounds of political elites, their electoral bases, and the nature of social inequality at the time the political elites assume power.
While the fieldwork is restricted to six states (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Bihar, Gujarat, Himachal and Punjab), the quantitative part of the research is based on all major states. The interns will spend substantial time in analyzing political speeches. The aim of the research project is to analyze how the priorities of a state define the limits of social and economic freedom for the citizens of that state.

MEET THE MENTOR
Poulomi Chakrabarti is currently pursuing her PhD in Political Science at Brown University. She previously acquired her masters’ degree in International Development from MIT and an undergraduate degree in Urban Planning from the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi. Before joining Brown University, she worked on issues related to decentralization and local governance at the World Bank in Washington DC, and at the Center for Policy Research in New Delhi.
