Dear friends,

Join the Thomas Merton Center Antiwar Committee, Black Voices for Peace and several endorsing groups – listed below - in a FORUM ON THE IMPACT OF THE WARS ON PITTSBURGH. We will discuss how Pittsburgh’s share of the Pentagon budget could be better spent on improvements right here in the city:

What: Forum on the Impact of the Wars on Pittsburgh
When: October 6, 2012, 1pm to 4pm
Where: East Liberty Presbyterian Church, Penn & Highland Avenues

The Pittsburgh public school system and the public bus system, our city’s historic bridges, libraries, and other basic human service institutions are war casualties. They are faced with catastrophic budget cuts, massive layoffs, and draconian service reductions. Much of the city’s tax monies which could help support these services have been used to finance the senseless US wars in Afghanistan and elsewhere. Pittsburgh will continue to suffer like this as long as these wars continue.

We will hear from veterans and key human services organizations about how the wars have affected them, and discuss how to rebuild the Pittsburgh anti-war movement in a way that connects to these crucial local struggles. Speakers include:

* Diane Santoriello, Military Families Speak Out
* Amy Boyles, Suicide Prevention, Veterans Administration
* Representative of Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers
* Helen Gerhardt, Occupy Pittsburgh and Iraq Veteran
* Ryan Branagan, Students for Justice in Palestine
* Representative of Just Harvest
