Duquesne University denied members of the United Steelworkers Adjuncts Association voluntary union recognition this morning, Jeff Cech, a spokesman for The United Steelworkers, said.

Mr. Cech said Duquesne officials indicated they would "prefer to go through the [National Labor Relations Board]" before recognizing the union.

The union, if recognized, would serve as the negotiating representative of all adjunct faculty members employed by the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts.

A majority of the 124 adjuncts at Duquesne are in favor of forming a union and asked for recognition from the university's vice president of management and business, Steve Schillo, according to the United Steelworkers.

United Steelworkers plans to file for an election with the NLRB on behalf of the Adjuncts Association.
