Subject: We Are One transit action this Monday

Hey Everyone,

Our friends at the We Are One Coalition are organizing this action and press conference on Monday at 4pm.  Here are some details from their e-mail:

Monday, February 6th @ 4:00pm – Join us for a VOLUNTEER LEAFLETING ACTION (Kicked off by a press conference):  Mr. Governor – Transit cuts will cripple our region’s fragile economy
Details:  A 4:00pm press conference will be held at the Intersection of Ninth Avenue and Liberty Avenue in Downtown, Pittsburgh (In front of parking garage).  From that location, volunteers will be assigned to various bus routes in downtown that are at risk of being eliminated because of the Governor’s refusal to fully fund public transportation.  Volunteers will be provided with leaflets and instructions to the bus stop that they have been assigned to leaflet.  Leafleting will go until 6:00pm.
Why:   Our Governor is refusing to listen to the recommendations of his own transportation advisory committee, and threatening to leave 45,000 residents of our region without public transportation.  These transit cuts will have dire consequences upon our already fragile economy.  The most blatant example of this is the fact that one of the bus routes that could be eliminated is the 28x, which is the only bus that services the Pittsburgh International Airport – a major economic hub for our region.  Further, these cuts will exacerbate congestion, and isolate countless neighborhoods from the rest of our region’s vital services (hospitals, universities, etc).  Our region’s economy, bus riders, and people that commute in and out of the city by car cannot tolerate the adverse effects of the looming transit cuts.
Our goal is to leaflet more than 7,000 residents and riders, and have them contact the Governor to urge him to take the advice of his own transportation advisory committee.
