Hi everybody,

I am trying to come up with a complete list of web applications that are useful for research or teaching. I’m sure people on this list have heard about and/or used plenty of them and I’m eager to hear any feedback they might have about it.
In particular, have you used them to collaborate with coauthors ? Are there solutions worth paying for (subjective assessment allowed…) ? Is it already realistic to fully work from the cloud ?

Best,

Pablo

Here are a few propositions to start with:

computational platforms

paper management

latex edititing

document edition

collaboration

conferencing

source control

file storage/sharing

Hey Pablo,

Just a small note: at Chevaleret we use Gitter which we preferred to Slack because it's open source. No experience with Basecamp.

Also, I don't know if you all have experience storing binary files with git. So far we've used git-lfs, but would be open to other suggestions. The drawback to git-lfs being that it's a bit of work to set up a local copy of the binary file server and it's not clear how to back it up from gitlab (to use it on github requires an enterprise account)

Best,
Houtan

Thank you Houtan and Stephane,

I didn't know Zotero had a web interface. Sandstorm also look very interesting but I must say I don't completely understand what it does. When you use it to create a new document, say with Sharelatex, it is not clear where the files are ultimately stored.

Speaking about opensource applications, have you tried to install your own instances of Jupyterhub ?

Best,

Pablo

Hi all,

Things I (will) use(d) that are not in the list:

Zotero <https://www.zotero.org>

ownCloud <https://owncloud.org/> (for file sharing and more)

Gitter <https://gitter.im>

Bittorrent Sync (decentralized file sharing) <https://www.getsync.com/>

Syncthing <https://syncthing.net/>, a free alternative to BTSync

And I want to try

https://sandstorm.io/

(Ideally) I would not use a lot of the web applications/services you
mention, they are not free (Google, Github, Dropbox, Office, ...) and
I tend to prefer open source alternatives. More generally, I am not
really convinced by cloud apps/services, because I like (and often
need) to work offline.

Best,
Stéphane.
