Gender, Music, and Sustainability: Women’s Roles in Indigenous Cultures
Panel Description:
This panel explores the often-overlooked roles that women play in indigenous musical traditions, ecological knowledge transmission, and sustainability efforts. Women are key figures in fisheries, agricultural systems, and other resource-based economies, yet their contributions—both in labor and cultural expressions—remain underrepresented in scholarly discourse. By examining music, embodied performance, and environmental stewardship, this panel will highlight the ways in which women’s knowledge and artistic expressions shape sustainable practices within their communities.
This panel aims to bring together scholars, practitioners, and community members working at the intersection of gender, music, and sustainability to foster an inclusive, interdisciplinary discussion. I would be delighted to coordinate this session and welcome any feedback or suggestions.
