Dear all,

I recently joined this mailing list. I am a Swiss National Science Foundation fellow affiliated to the University of Vienna and the Geneva Graduate Institute. I work on the political ecology of aluminium, copper and graphite production.

I recently had the opportunity to attend the Future Minerals Forum taking place in Saudi Arabia. This recurring event is, as long as the Gulf Region is not too much involved in geopolitical warfare, becoming something of a “Davos of the mining sector”.

What struck me most is how developing countries are increasingly turning to Saudi Arabia to channel funding into their mining sectors, as other sources of investment – from European countries, for example – are perceived as being too demanding in terms of social and environmental requirements. This raises, in my view, a number of important questions.

I wrote this blogpost about it, which you can read here: https://miningbeyondhotair.org/2026/02/19/dawn-of-a-global-cause-what-if-saudi-arabia-became-a-major-mining-hub/.

Happy reading, and I would be very interested in your thoughts.

Best regards,

UAE too is increasingly involved in such supply chains and investing. I think it was Africa's largest investor last year, or something close.

On the dynamics of the full length of these supply chains, I have just published this journal article:
Johnston, Lauren. "The ‘Hunan Model’: A new approach in China focused on economic development hurdles in Africa." South African Journal of International Affairs (2026): 1-28.

Presumably, as the "Hunan Model" (or perhaps more accurately "Hunan mode") advances, those changes may become even more true. Shock after shock seems to add to its importance. And now this oil shock - turns out BYD is based in Hunan Province, and as are a few areas of minerals processing capabilities.
