Hello all,
Sharing a new correspondence published in Nature Energy, in which Jessica DiCarlo, Raphaël Deberdt, Nicole M. Smith, Aaron Malone, Lydia Jennings, and I argue that reshuffling the geographies of critical minerals production through 'on-shoring,' 're-shoring,' or 'friend-shoring' will not inherently advance a just energy transition and may produce new inequalities. We instead propose 'just-shoring': a framework for developing critical minerals policy, practice, and evaluation that embeds distributive, procedural, and restorative justice across the mineral lifecycle--from exploration and permitting to processing, closure, remediation, and recycling. Best,
