Remote Computer Access allows the user to control any computer from
another computer. Usually this is a task for a network administrator,
but nowadays many people have more than one computer and switching
between them takes a lot of time. Imagine, you can sit at your place
of work and control your home computer. You can help your friends or
family solve problems on their computers, watching on your monitor and
using your own mouse and keyboard.

remote control software
http://www.answers.com/topic/remote-control-software-technology
Software that lets a user control a local computer from a remote
location via a network connection. The software is installed at both
ends, and both local and remote users can control the machine. Each
user sees the same screen display as if they were both looking at the
same machine.

Also known as "desktop sharing," "remote desktop sharing" and
"application sharing," remote control software is used to provide
instruction and technical support to remote users at their computers
as well as take control of an unattended computer from a remote
location.

Remote Control Vs. Remote Node

In remote control, only keystrokes and mouse movement are sent from
the remote machine, and only screen changes are sent back to the
remote. All application processing takes place in the local computer.

In contrast, a remote node setup is the normal way remote users log in
to the company network. All data flows to the remote machine as if it
were a local PC. With high-speed connections, remote node is the
preferred method; however, if an enormous amount of data on the
network must be processed by a remote user who has only a dial-up
connection or perhaps a slow computer, the remote control method can
be used. Instead of passing all the data to the remote PC, the user's
unattended local PC performs the processing under the control of the
remote PC. The remote user will not have the actual data files, but
will have the results of the processing on the remote screen, which
can be captured and saved. See application sharing, Remote Desktop and
VNC.

Remote Desktop
http://www.answers.com/topic/remote-desktop?cat=technology

A feature in Windows XP Professional that allows the machine to be run
remotely from another Windows machine over any dial-up or LAN TCP/IP
connection. Remote Desktop is actually the Windows-based Terminal
Server, which uses the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to exchange only
keystrokes and screen changes. For example, you can use any Windows
laptop or desktop machine from a remote location to run your office XP
Professional machine as if you were sitting at your desk.

Virtual Network Computing VCN
http://www.answers.com/topic/virtual-network-computing?cat=technology

(Virtual Network Computing) Open source remote control software for
accessing host computers from a variety of remote clients. A VNC
"server" is the host being accessed, while the VNC "client" is the
remote device doing the controlling and viewing. VNC uses Java client
viewers, which can run on any platform that supports Java-based Web
browsers.

Developed at Olivetti & Oracle Research Labs in the U.K. in the late
1990s, the Labs were acquired by AT&T in 1999.

RealVNC and UltraVNC

Maintained by some of the original team that developed it, RealVNC
www.realvnc.com.provides both Windows and Java client viewers that can
access Windows, Mac or Unix hosts. UltraVNC www.ultravnc.com.provides
Java access to Windows hosts only.

Desktop sharing
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_sharing

Desktop sharing is a common name for technologies and products that
allow remote access and remote collaboration on a person's computer
desktop through a graphical Terminal emulator.

The most common two scenarios for desktop sharing are:

* Remote log-in
* Real-time collaboration

Remote log-in allows users to connect to their own desktop while being
physically away from their computer. Systems that support the X Window
System, typically Unix-based ones, have this ability "built in".
Windows versions starting from Windows 2000 have a built-in solution
for remote access as well in the form of Remote Desktop Protocol and
prior to that in the form of Microsoft’s NetMeeting.

The open source product VNC [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VNC ]
provides cross-platform solution for remote log-in.

The shortcoming of the above solutions are their inability to work
outside of a single NAT environment. A number of commercial products
overcome this restriction by tunneling the traffic through rendezvous
servers.

Real-time collaboration is much a bigger area of desktop sharing use,
and it has gained recent momentum as an important component of rich
multimedia communications. Desktop sharing, when used in conjunction
with other components of multimedia communications such as audio and
video, creates the notion of virtual space where people can meet,
socialize and work together. On the larger scale, this area is also
referred as web conferencing.

accès à distance

Télémaintenance
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C3%A9l%C3%A9maintenance

maintenance : PC Anywhere, LANDesk Management, NetOp Remote
Control,DameWare et VNC (open source).

Assistance à distance (informatique)
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assistance_%C3%A0_distance_%28informatique%29

Utilisations

* Enseignement.
* Aide aux utilisateurs. (prise en main à distance)
* Contrôle d'ordinateurs n'ayant aucun écran, clavier ou souris
connectés.
* Administration de réseaux locaux d'entreprise.

Logiciel d'administration sécurisée à distance
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat%C3%A9gorie:Logiciel_d%27administration_s%C3%A9curis%C3%A9e_%C3%A0_distance
