Hey everyone,

I was wondering if we could build a sustainable garden for the school? I don't know if they already have one, but I think it would be a nice partnership with the Hospitality department, and the cafeteria.

Thanks for your time,
Angela

Hello everyone,
I am one of the club advisors for Ecologic and am glad to see the interest expressed here!  I teach in the Biological Sciences Dept at Mission.  The other advisor, Elizabeth Bell, is my colleague in this dept.  Thank you Erin for getting this dialog going and Sandra for adding names to google group.

I think that Melika's suggestion about suggesting dates and times to meet is excellent and I offer mine below.

I also wanted to get back to an idea put forward by Angela on May 16th about a sustainable garden (see email below).  Through a new environmental studies class offered by our department, we have just established vermiculture bins and this semester have been collecting food waste from Hospitality management.  Thanks to the students effort 377 lbs of food waste has been diverted from landfill!!!    If there is interest in being part of this project this summer, I would welcome your participation.  It's pretty fun and I have grown quite fond of those hard-working worms.  We are generating some beautiful rich compost and I am open to ideas on its use.

FYI, If anyone in interested in earning units for doing green projects, please contact me and consider signing up for BIOSC92E this Fall: Special Projects in Environmental Studies section 13464 (2 units).  Projects take place on campus or off campus too at places like SF Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Shoreline Park, Guadalupe River Park, etc.

Here's my availability for club meetings this Fall, in order of preference.  I would like to suggest a meeting frequency of every other week
Best days:  Wednesday 11-5
                     Tuesday 3-5:25
Mondays and Thursdays could also be possible

Warm regards,
Jean Replicon

Are you referring to club meetings or helping over the summer with the composting project?

Btw, if we do consider using the compost for a sustainable garden, we could partner with collectiveroots.org for guidance.  I've contacted them for a few questions as I'm helping my sister build a garden in her backyard.  We're in the preliminary stage of building planters from an old garage door (fun project).  You can check out the pictures here: verdemarket.blogspot.com

On another note, does ecologic have a website or facebook page?  If not, maybe we could blog about our projects to spread awareness beyond the school, and into the community.  Just thinking out loud.  I'm speaking from personal experience because I blog about projects I do around the house and share with my friends on fb. It's a great way to share information beyond our geography.

Good night,
angela

Hi Jean,

Although my schedule has been a bit tight, but my willing for this support and joining in the project won't be refused as long as I am in the Mission campus....I will spend my flexible time to give your folks a hand instead.

Best regards,

Danny, A Biosc student

To Danny, Angela, and anyone else who' might be interested....
Wow, If you had time and interest to do some composting this summer with me, that would be awesome!!!
I find it helpful to work with others...makes it more fun too!  I will be on campus M-Th teaching Microbiology.  I am available to meet up before class.  My class starts June 6th and meets at 12:40 Monday through Thursday.
Would meeting at 11:30 or noon work for your schedule on any of those days?  We could meet one or two days a week, depending on your availability

I am attaching a picture of a garden project I do with my Intro to Biology classes.  This semester we tested the effect of the amount of store bought organic fertilizer on rate of plant growth.  Next semester I am looking forward to testing the effect of our campus's worm castings!

Jean

PS  Thanks for the tip about Collective Roots, Angela. I see they host field trips too.  I am always on the look out for good field trip destinations for my classes.

Jean,

Thanks for sharing the picture, very cool!

I'm available Thursday at 11:30.

Btw, do you have any more room in your Biosc10 class? I'm on the wait list, and wondering if you have the space for the large number of us on it? I'm registered in another class (just in case) but wanted to see how likely of a chance I have to get in.  I'm ranked 23 out of 26 so my likelihood is very small, unless you have a lot of space. (fingers crossed)

Best,
Angela

Ps- you're welcome :-)

Cool.  I'll meet you and anyone else that might be interested at my office at SCI-130 on Thursday June 9th at 11:30 and then give you a tour of our worm bins located underneath the Science Building stairwells.  Your home/school food scraps are welcome too since the Hospitality Management slows their pace way down for the Summer and those wigglers get hungry.

Hi Jean,

Thank for sharing a wicked cool pic...especially a botanic environment.....Yet I have an idea where the Worm cans location...(because Michele once showed me while she was standing up work at this spot...)

The bottom line, I definitely will be on the campus and get ahold of you for further details of the project help, because I currently registered for the Biosc-48 course in this Summer.

 Best regards,
Danny
