Hello EcoEd Community,

I am thrilled to announce the 2026 Leopold Writing Contest! This year’s contest features quotations by Aldo Leopold and Joy Harjo.

Each year, the Leopold Writing Program invites New Mexican students in grades 6-12 to write an essay responding to an environmental-themed writing prompt. The essays are assessed by a panel of judges and the winning essayists receive monetary awards at a celebration on Earth Day.

Please share this opportunity with teachers, students, and colleagues. This is an excellent way to get students thinking about environmental issues and to get them excited about writing.

On our website we have provided additional resources for teachers and students as well as a series of lesson plans that teachers can incorporate into their classrooms. We are offering the contest in both English and Spanish.

More information can be found in the attached flyers, at the bottom of this email, and on our website: https://www.leopoldwritingprogram.org/writing-contest.html

We are also currently seeking Spanish-speaking volunteers who are invested in environmental writing to join our Spanish-language Writing Contest judging panel and promotion team. Please email Nina at ni...@leopoldwritingprogram.org if you are interested in volunteering.

Thank you,

Nina

The Leopold Writing Program is pleased to announce

The 2026 Aldo Leopold

Writing Contest

Each year, the Aldo Leopold Writing Contest invites New Mexico students in Grades 6-12 to submit essays in response to a carefully crafted and thought-provoking prompt inspired by the writings of Aldo Leopold: conservationist, educator, philosopher, and writer.

Cash prizes are awarded to the top essayists in three grade categories:  Grades 6-7, 8-9, and 10-12.

We encourage you to share this information with students, educators, administrators, and libraries to assure extensive opportunities for Contest participation statewide.

We are offering the contest in both English and Spanish.

DEADLINE for Essay Submissions

All entries must be submitted by
11:59 pm MST on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2026.

Award-winning essayists and their teachers will be notified in April.

This year's contest features quotations by two environmental writers: Aldo Leopold, who believed that the idea of community should include humans, plants, animals, and the land, and Joy Harjo, an Indigenous writer, musician, and poet, who writes about humankind's connection to land.

QUOTATIONS

“It's possible to understand the world from studying a leaf. You can comprehend the laws of aerodynamics, mathematics, poetry and biology through the complex beauty of such a perfect structure. It's also possible to travel the whole globe and learn nothing.”

― Joy Harjo, The Woman Who Fell from The Sky: Poems

"The last word in ignorance is the [person] who says of an animal or plant, 'What good is it?'"

― Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac

ESSAY PROMPT

Using examples from your own experience, write about how we can learn important lessons by paying attention to the natural world. Be sure to reference both quotations in your essay.

Visit our website for instructions, additional details, resources, and activities to help students come up with essay ideas.
