Dear all,
Here's a new reason to save plastic bottles that's even more
exciting than recycling... Did you know that plastic bottles can
be used to make construction bricks?
We are starting a project to build community water tanks using
waste plastic bottles, so please bring us your empty 1.5
litre bottles - with lids (see attached flier)! There is a collection point in at St
Monica's School (Next to the Anglican Cathedral).
For this project we strictly need only 1.5 litre bottles with
lids, so please continue to send all other bottles to ZASEA,
Green House Plastic Recycling Centre, or
to other projects for reuse or recycling!
This project has been set up by Stephen Read, a long-time Jambiani
resident, and we are delighted to welcome him (and his amazing
project) to the Sustainable East Africa team.
The first water tank will be built in the rural community of Mwera
in the Dole region, and then more water tanks, and other buildings
such as latrines will be built in other communities.
Two Ugandan local fundis who have experience in the technique will
soon arrive in Zanzibar, to work with and train local people to
build with bottles, and share their expertise with others in
communities around Zanzibar.
So please help us get the programme started by bringing your
bottles to St Monica's, and spreading the word - see the attached
flier!
