Synopsis of Forum:

Being one of the fastest region for economic development in the world, Southeast Asia has however been often criticized in its methods of dealing with certain social issues. With the creation of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) in 2009, the region’s bloc has shown its interest and has taken its first step in addressing the increase calls to social issues in the region.

Though some has viewed the creation of this body negatively, others see it as a start for commitment amongst ASEAN member states. With different paces of economic as well as social developments amongst the member states of ASEAN, how can the AICHR reach a consensus in dealing with human rights issue? Certainly, one would have to view human rights issues concurrently with the social development of the region in order to obtain an accurate perspective.

With experts from the field speaking, the Forum aims to explain the meaning and significance of human rights in the region as well as how developments here affect the perception and stance of governments regarding social issues like rights of minorities, press freedom. What are the constraints faced by countries in pursuing these social developments? And what can we do to continue championing this social cause?
