Macchio and Whitfield play William Gambini and Stanley Rothenstein, two young New Yorkers who are arrested in Alabama and put on trial for a murder they did not commit. Unable to afford a lawyer, they are defended by Gambini's cousin Vinny Gambini (Pesci), newly admitted to the bar, who arrives with his fiancée, Mona Lisa Vito (Tomei). The clash between the brash Italian-American New Yorkers and the more reserved Southern townspeople[3] provide much of the film's humor. The principal location of filming was Monticello, Georgia.[4]

Driving through Alabama, Bill Gambini and Stan Rothenstein, college students from New York, shop at a convenience store. After they leave, the store clerk is robbed and killed. Due to circumstantial evidence, Bill is charged with first-degree murder and Stan as an accessory; Bill and Stan assumed they were being busted after Bill accidentally forgot to pay for a can of tuna. Bill and Stan use Bill's cousin, Vinny Gambini, a personal injury lawyer from Brooklyn, because they can't afford a private lawyer, and he'll represent them for free. Vinny is newly admitted to the bar and has no trial experience. He arrives in Alabama with his fiancée, Mona Lisa Vito, who comes from a family of mechanics.

Despite the good-but-not-great initial reviews, My Cousin Vinny is generally considered to have held up as one of the most remembered and watched movies of the 1990s. The movie performed well in home video sales and rentals (originally VHS, and eventually DVD) and received frequent play on cable television. The film's catchier quotes became well known as well.[15]

I mean, Joe Pesci is on fire through out, you have a relative unknown (at that time) Marisa Tomei who smashes it with her deliveries. The script was so well written as to come back to every detail earlier in the movie, which seemed trivial at that point in the movie, but was so important to the climax of the film. All in all I would say that this is one of the more perfect movies ever filmed.

The film stars Joe Pesci as a New Yorker who thinks a black knit shirt under a black leather jacket, if set off by a gold chain around the neck, is elegant courtroom attire. He might be right if he were a defendant in the Bronx, but the movie takes place in Alabama, and he's the defense attorney. His cousin (Ralph Macchio) and a friend (Mitchell Whitfield), two innocent college students on their way to school, have been charged with the murder of a convenience store owner. The circumstantial evidence looks damning, but the worst thing they have going against them is Pesci's sweeping lack of legal experience.

Pesci, who is the Macchio character's cousin Vinny, has finally passed the bar on his sixth attempt. He has no courtroom experience, and indeed no experience at all except with a few personal injury cases. He arrives in town with his girlfriend, named Mona Lisa Vito and played by Marisa Tomei as a woman who has a certain legal potential trapped inside a street-smart personality.

Back when I took Evidence at the Beasley School of Law at Temple University, Professor JoAnne Epps (now Dean Epps) told us that, of all the movies about the law and about trials, there was only one movie we had to watch: My Cousin Vinny.

Two New Yorkers are accused of a murder in rural Alabama and must call in their inept cousin Vinny to defend them in court. Jokes abound when the Northern and Southern stereotypes collide. Joe Pesci, Ralph Macchio and Marisa Tomei star in the film, which has become one of Georgia's most iconic movies. The Oscar-winning film celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017, and you can still visit many of the locations in Monticello and beyond.

I am fully aware movies are movies and not real life and the film is a pure work of fiction. Since I have no direct connection to anyone in the legal field, I thought I would ask some knowledgeable users about something that's always had me wondering. (Just saw the film again tonight.)

Two guys from New Jersey are charged with murder of the clerk at the Sack-o-Suds convenience store in Wazoo City, Alabama. They accidentally confessbecause they think they've been charged with shoplifting. Their cousin Vincent Gambini, fresh out of law school, comes down to Alabama with his girlfriendto represent them. The judge is Fred Gwynne, better known as Herman Munster on the old TV show, "The Munsters."

Before Atlanta and New Orleans became the production hubs they are today, lots of Hollywood movies that supposedly take place in the South were filmed either on Hollywood backlots or even in Canada for tax purposes. But for My Cousin Vinny, there was never an idea to film anywhere but the actual South.

Launer: They were largely these middle-aged women she was up against, mostly grand dames of British theater, though one [Judy Davis] was Australian. We figured they would divide that vote. Also, Vinny made more money than all those movies put together.

Parents need to know that the language is crude throughout. Because the film's humor and story are appealing to older tweens and teens, it's regrettable that the filmmakers illustrate the "fish out of water" nature of the leading characters with so much swearing and rough language. When two college-bound New York boys are mistakenly arrested for murder in a small Alabama town, Vinny (Joe Pesci), who is a cousin of one of the boys and who has recently passed the bar after six tries, is called to the rescue. Vinny and his fiancee, Mona Lisa (Marisa Tomei), street-savvy "declasse" Italians from the big city, arrive to take on the town's earnest legal establishment and the serious circumstantial evidence against the young men. It's a ferocious battle between Eastern street smarts and Southern propriety. The two cultures meet head on with both boys' freedom at stake.

A search of "best lawyer movies" will always lead you to "My Cousin Vinny," and even a shallow dive into its history will lead you to legal professionals singing its praises; its Wikipedia page rounds up glowing remarks from a Supreme Court Justice, a Seventh Circuit Court of Appeal Judge, and a law school professor. There's good reason for that, too. Aside from its accuracy, it does a brilliant job of treating the court proceedings as a neutral backdrop. Sure, the judge is crotchety, the cops are knuckleheads, and the prosecutor has the air of a baddie, but the villain in "My Cousin Vinny" isn't some corrupt system played for drama, it's merely the tale of the legal system at work.

Due to a string of mix-ups, both young men are charged with the crime and brought to trial, and since they have no money to pay for a lawyer, Bill's cousin Vinny steps in to help them along with his fiancée Mona Lisa. As much as this may seem like a lifesaver for both of them, it also brings with it a few problems: Vinny has just graduated from law school after many unsuccessful attempts and has never won a case. Moreover, his outspoken personality makes him very much at odds with the townspeople, something that does nothing to help him get the case back on track.

Joe Pesci stars in this 1992 film as the hilarious Vinny Gambini, the underdog lawyer who ends up proving to everyone, including himself, that he has what it takes to win his cousin's case. By the time he was cast as the lead in this production, Pesci was very well known in the industry. His performance in the crime film The Death Collector got the attention of Martin Scorsese, who cast him in Raging Bull and subsequently called him back for Goodfellas and Casino. His role in My Cousin Vinny is not the only comic part in his career: the actor is also known for his parts in other genre blockbusters, most notably in Home Alone and its sequel.

In My Cousin Vinny, Ralph Macchio plays Bill Gambini, the young man accused of murder who, in spite of his doubts, was confident that his cousin could win the case. And although Macchio has worked on several projects throughout his career, his most popular one is, hands down, the Karate Kid film series, where he played Daniel LaRusso in the original 1984 film and two sequels.

In recent years, Tomei joined the MCU to play Aunt May in Tom Holland's Spider-Man movies, which earned her widespread popularity among new audiences. The actress remains very active in the industry to this day: earlier this year she co-starred in Rebecca Miller's romantic comedy She Came to Me alongside Peter Dinklage, and she is also expected to star in the upcoming film Upgraded, which still has no release date.

In this 1992 film Bruce McGill plays Sheriff Dean Farley, although this is not the only film in which the actor has portrayed an authority figure: he has played this kind of role on many occasions, in movies such as Cliffhanger, The Insider, and Collateral, among many others. Ever since his acting debut in the 1977 comedy Handle with Care, McGill has remained active in the industry as part of many projects, although in recent years he has enjoyed greater success in television.

Two New Yorkers are accused of murder in rural Alabama while on their way back to college, and one of their cousins--an inexperienced, loudmouth lawyer not accustomed to Southern rules and manners--comes in to defend them.

The Indian film industry, also known as Bollywood, plans to remake the 1992 U.S. movie My Cousin Vinny. Usually Indian filmmakers take the plots from Hollywood movies without getting legal permission, but this time producers are asking for the American studio's approval, which could be a first for Bollywood.

PATEL: That Joe Pesci's title character Vinny Gambini - point-taken, Vinny. For decades, Bollywood had lifted plots from Hollywood movies without obtaining permission from the copyright holders - "Sleepless in Seattle," "Mrs. Doubtfire," "Fight Club."

We're sure the Oscar-winning actor has probably heard the phrase "two youts" a few times throughout his career. Though he announced his retirement from the business in 1999, Joe continued to make movies throughout the 2000s. Most recently, the actor reunited in 2019 with longtime friend and costar Robert DeNiro in The Irishman.
