The following performance on Aug 30 at Eastside Arts Alliance is inspired
by shamanic ritual from Jeju Island in Korea, where my grandfather is
from (many Zainichi Koreans in Japan are) and my mom has told me stories
of some of the shamanistic practices she remembers experiencing as a
child.
The performance also includes a sneak peak at another production which is about the struggle in Jeju Island.
For
3 years, the struggle in Jeju Island has been one of the people in
Gangjeong village resisting the naval base being built by the South
Korean military. Jeju is famous for being a popular honeymoon
destination, praised for its pristine natural environment, which will be
devastated by this construction. The building of yet another military
base in the Asia-Pacific is an expansion of US imperialism and
militarism, and an extension of the Cold War conflict between
China/Russia/North Korea and U.S./Japan/South Korea.
Jeju also has a history of conflict and resistance, including the
very bloody Jeju massacre, a precursor to the Korean War, where 10% of
the island's population was obliterated because they resisted the
division of the nation and were labeled as communist by the new
US-backed South Korean president, Syngman Rhee.
