It shows >> marker by default. I couldn't locate the code that outputs this specific string. Can you please point me to it? If its OK, can this be externalized as a VIM setting? I like to have a simpler character like bang (!) to denote error/warning.

You can change the sign text by setting g:EclimLoclistSignText.
