Hey all,

Since iriscouch (a couchdb hosting provider) finally upgraded to
couchdb 1.1.0, the hosted version of Ecko-It can now be used as well!

Here is a link to a very small snippet of me using the liferecorder
today at lunch.

Hopefully this will give you more of a feel with it with audio. There
are a few strange navigation issues with Ecko-It in the hosted
environment (that are being worked through), but feel free to click
away.

I would ask if you want to play with creating new tags on this audio,
please replicate the this db to your local couch.

I will work hard at getting a way for you to upload any audio into
your Ecko-It, so you can at least get some stuff to try on your own.

Oh, link bug. I did not realize the '|' would not be included in the
link. It will still work, but you can also try this:

Ryan, do you mean by upload that one could use non-liferecorder audio
samples, ones recorded by any device?

I think that would lead to greater initial adoption. Anyone who really
likes it can take the next step and get the extra benefits of the
custom liferecorder.

One sidenote. Right now the interface is a mystery as a new user. I
listened to the audio sample but have no clue how to continue. It's
not intuitive to me at all.

Yes, I know you brought this up before, and I think it is a great idea. The audio will have to be in an acceptable format, and it will need a time marker for a start point. How I see it working is that you select a directory, and provide a format for reading the datetime from the filename. Then ecko-it will suck it into the timeline. And then you can tag it.

Does that work?

Hmm. Yes, this I would really like to address. It seems fairly common complaint. I would like any suggestions. Again, I have some ideas in mind, but I would like to hear from you...

For now, probably what you might be interested in is going to the timeline view. Click on the link that will say something like (about 2 hours ago). If you need it, here is a direct link:
[Actually I have not tested that with timezones....because you will be in a different one. Let me know if it takes you to the same audio in the timeline view.]

And I guess I revoke what I said before. Feel free to edit if you want to. Make new topics, tag the audio. I just will warn you if others are doing it at the same time a few small issues may arise. Nothing will really break.

Also, while a *good* UI should be intuitive, bad ones require *tutorials*. You can check out these two if you get stuck:

They look long, but a quick skim through might help you see what you can do.

You mean mp3, ogg or wav?

Date format because different ones are used?

I think it would be okay to agree on one format, the international one
YYYY-MM-DD-HH:MM:SS

A javascript conversion tool could be added later, but best to use a
common format within Eckoit.

I think so. I would need to use it a bit to know.

Same for the UI. Right now, although I read the docs a few months ago,
only practical usage will help design a more intuitive UI.

Yup, those are the formats that are acceptable.

I would like to be able to support what rockbox spits out which is R_MIC_110621-211638.mp3  (yymmdd-hhmmss). I have a bunch of audio backlog that I would like to suck in. :)

But that being said, I think the default expected format should be YYYY-MM-DD-HH:MM:SS as suggested. So do you have files already like:
2011-06-21-21:16:38.wav ??

Regarding the UI: I came across the Guiders library today which offers
a "hand-holding" approach for new (or forgetful) users. Would this be
of use?

That library looks great. It saves the custom guiders that I had on the dashboard page, and makes it easy to do more for the topics and other views.
