I cannot get EckoIt to start on Windows 7. I can see it tries to start in task manager, then fails.
The logo appears. No try icon. A reboot did not help.

I also had to manually create the "life" db, and replicate it from the master host at couchone/iriscouch. This problem existed the last time I tried EckoIt on Windows XP in March 2011, so I was able to follow Ryan's guidance from back then.
However, EckoIt did start at the time on XP, and showed up in the tray. So I guess this means Java debugging and I don't have much of a clue about Java.

How do I find out why it's failing?

Marcus,

Glad to hear you got your recorder.
Try to install the latest Ecko-it from this link

http://ecko-it.iriscouch.com/i/_design/takeout/install.html

Let me know if this gets you further ahead.

We are a step further. EckoIt appears in the tray.

Initially selecting "Open EckoIt" from the tray icon opened the
dashboard page in the browser, but the page had no connection to a db.
Then after about 5 mins the page suddenly popped open in a new tab and
was connected. Weird.

Only problem left is that the Liferecorder is not syncing. Could
autoplay be in the way? (Windows autoplay prompts me) Or should EckoIt
see the device anyway?

Btw, will EckoIt recognise the Liferecorder under Linux too? I know
EckoIt worked with Firefox under Linux for me. Can't remember which db
to replicate though, or how EckoIt knows which db to use (since
couchdb is not on localhost).
