Associeties around the world grapple with problems ranging from the individual to the collective, from the achievement of personal well-being to the avoidance of war, violence, and strife, we must take into consideration the influence of the prenatal period in the formation of the selves that go on to act in the world. As the evidence of IN UTERO shows, nurturing unborn children, as well as their mothers and families during the prenatal period can have a positive impact on the broader ways in which society unfolds.

IN UTERO premiered at the 2015 Seattle International Film Festival where it was selected as one of 12 films to be in the documentary competition. See here for upcoming screenings and more information.

In Utero is now streaming on demand on Amazon, iTunes and Vudu.com. Visit the website to find public screenings or request to host one in your area at www.inuterofilm.com. The film discussion and resource guide is available on www.birthpsychology.com and www.kindredmedia.com or by clicking here.

The film is narrated by Tony Ponfret and produced by Thomas Walker. Those interviewed include Nirvana's original drummer Chad Channing, Kurt Cobain's biographer Charles R. Cross, and music producer Jack Endino. The DVD also include biographies of the contributors, an interactive Nirvana quiz, and a two-minute bonus discussion of the Unplugged in New York album.[2]

The DVD received generally negative reviews. PopMatters.com said, "That the album warrants a focused discussion on its creation and impact, both at the time and ongoing, is without debate," but felt that it was "surprising and disappointing" that the collected critics and writers found "so little new to say about the band and their work".[3] It was criticized for its poor choice in people interviewed (mainly British musicians and journalists with little connection to Nirvana).

Chris Akin of Blogcritics.com was more appreciative and said that the documentary "paints [the] picture of Nirvana's historic rise and tragic fall with a clarity and lack of bias that most of the others can't seem to muster."[5]

The documentary is set to be released for on-demand viewing on October 11, 2016. In anticipation of the on-demand release, Kathleen and Stephen speak to some of the hardest questions they have faced from international audiences, including: Why is the film so dark? Should pregnant mother see it? Is it a pro-life film?

A cinematic rumination on life in the womb and its lasting impact on human development, human behavior, and the state of the world. Fetal origins experts, research scientists, psychologists, doctors and midwives, as well as examples from popular culture and mythology, collectively demonstrate how our experiences in utero shape our future. In the year since its film premier at the Seattle International Film Festival, In Utero has been translated into ten languages and won multiple awards.

LISA REAGAN: Welcome to Kindred, an alternative media and non-profit initiative of Kindred World. This is Lisa Reagan, and today I am talking with the filmmakers of the documentary, In Utero, Stephen and Kathleen Gyllenhaal. In Utero premiered at the Seattle Film Festival in 2015 and over the past year has traveled to film festivals around the world. It has also been translated into ten languages and won multiple awards. Welcome, Kathleen and Stephen.

STEPHEN GYLLENHAAL: I think that it is both neurobiology and psychology. The thing is, there are so many issues and so many different points of view about what is a human being, but certainly from a neurobiological point of view, yeah, there seems to be what is the neurobiological effect of trauma in utero or even trans-generational trauma on the fetus? What happens with that? Does this developing organism then split off from that trauma and then try and protect having to deal with that trauma? I mean, these are very complicated, almost quantum-like issues, which the film in a way we can talk about them here, but it is almost better to see the film and then talk about it afterwards.

Integrating a quarter century of cultural transformation insights into grounded Wayfinder Wisdom, Lisa currently shepherds Kindred World in carrying out its ongoing nonprofit work through multiple initiatives and partner collaborations, including:

While scientific research into the relationship between toxic culture, social and domestic violence, disconnected communities, chronic illness and addiction is well-established with studies such as the venerable Adverse Childhood Events, or ACE report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, most studies begin with life after birth and end with individual health outcomes.

What is needed at this time is a safe gathering place, a sanctuary, created with great compassion to inspire and welcome our imaginations to engage in open dialogue, to create connected community, and to identify resources that support an adventurous exploration of thriving.

The DVD is not out yet, and the movie just premiered in Seattle. But stay tuned and we will let you know where IN UTERO goes next. You can also follow them on their Facebook and Twitter pages above. You can find screenings on their website, also listed above. Thank you connecting and good luck with your work!

Thank you for your inquiry into IN UTERO! The film is still in production and will be making the rounds at film festivals before it is released to the public. You can see a screening of the film at the upcoming APPPAH Congress in Berekely, CA, on December 5. Here is more information about the screening: -utero-film-and-filmmakers-attend-upcoming-apppah-congress-kindred-editor-moderates/

It is not available to the public yet. It is still being previewed in film festivals around the world. However, you can start following their blog on Huffington Post here: -its-time-to-stop-attacking-moms_us_5787e971e4b0cbf01e9f5d48

When exactly will this film be available to the public? It was released a year ago so would it be fair to say in another mother or more that it will be released to the public? I am an Alcohol and Drug Counselor and am very interested in getting a copy, I am also adopted and so is my younger brother and we are eager to see this movie. Thank you.

Hi I am a Midwife and I watched the documentary when it came out. It had a profound impact on me and want to share this video with expectant mothers. I realise from other posts that the video is not available for public use yet. Can you enlighten me to an estimate time frame of when it might become available for purchase in Australia. I am starting my own business called Maha Mothering and this webpage listed below will be launched on 6th Oct 2016.

In 2015, PBS produced the documentary series Twice Born toexplore how a woman gets from a diagnosis of fetal anomaly, to apotential treatment, to giving birth. The series predominantlyfollows two women pregnant with fetuses diagnosed with birthdefects, although the stories of other women are also included. Theseries is divided into three parts. Part one of Twice Bornintroduces two pregnant women undergoing testing for the possibilityof being candidates for in utero surgery. Part two of thedocumentary series continues following both pregnant women from partone as one of the women experiences the aftermath of in uterosurgery. Concluding the third part of the series, the filmmakersshow both women as they prepare to go home from the hospital withtheir infants after giving birth.

Inthe middle of the third episode, Geneva and her husband, Reggie, areintroduced as they learn that their fetus was diagnosed with a fetalurinary tract obstruction. A fetal urinary tract obstruction stopsthe flow of urine in the fetus. When the urine flow stops in thefetus, it can cause an enlarged bladder, enlarged kidneys, andpossibly death. Geneva receives an ultrasound to see how the fetalurinary tract obstruction is affecting her fetus. The ultrasoundshows the fetus is suffering from an enlarged bladder, more thandouble the size of a normal bladder, and enlarged kidneys.Physicians present two treatment options to Geneva and Reggie, toterminate the pregnancy or to undergo in utero surgery. Inthe series, Geneva and Reggie decide to proceed with in uterosurgery. Prior to obtaining the surgery, Geneva undergoes anadditional ultrasound to view how the fetal urinary tractobstruction is progressing. The results of the ultrasound show thatthe fetus has started to pass urine again, indicating inutero surgery is no longer required. As the documentary nearsits end, Geneva gives birth to her son, Ricky. After birth, Rickyundergoes a minor surgery for urinary obstruction. As the showconcludes its story on Ricky, it returns to Lilly, who is awaitingplastic surgery on her lip.

Twice Born, the three-partdocumentary series, acknowledged the benefits and risk of inutero procedures. On 21 September 2016, PBS was awarded theOutstanding Science and Technology Programming Emmy. As of 2017,more than 1200 fetal surgeries have been performed at CHOP since1995 and a fetal family reunion is held every summer for thefamilies.

"To Avoid Adult Dysfunction Start 'IN UTERO'" took a deeper look at the health ramifications of toxic stress in prenatal life and its role in contributing to adult disease. Her husband, Stephen Gyllenhaal, is a producer.

Now, we pivot to the behind-the-scenes of how and why such a story gets told. The interview will reveal interesting parallels between funding for films versus scientific research, how to deliver an effective public message and issues of motherhood, health and Hollywood.
