On behalf of the ECHS Thespian Society, we'd like to formally invite you all to our Fall Production of Thornton Wilder's classic comedy, The Matchmaker!

Originally titled The Merchant of Yonkers, and perhaps overshadowed in history and popular culture by its musical iteration, Hello, Dolly!, this classic farce still absolutely holds up.

From the synopsis:
Horace Vandergelder, a wealthy merchant in nineteenth-century Yonkers, New York, decides to take a wife and employs a matchmaker, Ms. Dolly Levi. Dolly subsequently becomes involved with two of Vandergelder's clerks, several lovely ladies, and the headwaiter at an expensive restaurant where this swift farce runs headlong into hilarious complications. After everyone gets straightened out romantically, Vandergelder finds himself affianced to the astute Dolly Levi herself.

The synopsis is adequate, but doesn't do this show justice--the Thespians have found incredible energy in Wilder's words, as well as the heart of the show. More than a simple "Love Conquers All" sort of conclusion, the show makes itself incisively clear--money isn't to be hoarded, but is best spread around a community, furnishing futures and frivolity wherever it goes.

Between the slapstick comedy, mistaken identities, Vandergelder's impotent rage, Dolly's charismatic manipulations of the situation, and four excellent soliloquies, the play leaps off the stage. You, your families, your students, and our community won't want to miss it! Spread the word!

It's an honor to see what the students have put together between their lunchtime meetings, limited resources, and the looming threat of the strike disrupting the production. Remember, the Thespian Society isn't a class--it's a student-driven production company and ASB Club. That means that they've made every choice along the way, and formed a community as they did.

Four shows only! On Thursday, November 13th and Friday, November 14th, we've got shows at 7:00pm. On Saturday, November 15th, we're doing both a 2:00pm Matinee and a 7:00pm final show.

Tickets are ten dollars at the door, but it's more important to us that we have a full house and share our art with the community than it is for this show to turn a profit. Times are tough--if folks don't have ten dollars for this, we'll still let 'em in. Every dollar we do collect, however, pays for this show's expenses, and hopefully funds the next one, too.

We hope to see you there! Take care!
