Dear High School Counselor,
My name is Tran Nguyen, and I am a current student at the University of California, Berkeley. On behalf of REACH!, the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Recruitment and Retention Center at UC Berkeley, I would like to invite students who identify as Asian and/or Pacific Islander at your high school to virtually join ShadowSelf 2021from November 1st to November 19th!
In collaboration with bridges Multicultural Resource Center, ShadowSelf is a three-week, fully remote, and all-expense-paid mentorship program that supports API identifying high school students all across California in their exploration of post-secondary pathways. We will also be awarding scholarships to selected mentees and distributing prizes upon attendance to our workshops.
Participants will engage in informative and inspiring workshops, dialogues, and additional peer-bonding activities, regarding higher education, self-empowerment, and political advocacy. The purpose of this program is to give high school students the support, resources, and information needed to aid them in their journey to higher education.
As the student-led Asian Pacific Islander Recruitment and Retention Center at UC Berkeley, we specifically serve low-income, under-resourced, and underserved Asian Pacific Islander (API) populations. For more information about REACH!, please do not hesitate to contact us at reach...@gmail.com.
If you know any high school students who identify as Asian and/or Pacific Islander that preferably satisfy the criteria above, please encourage them to fill out a RSVP form by Friday, October 22nd. Spaces are limited, therefore we would appreciate it if you can encourage your students to RSVP as soon as possible.
The RSVP link can also be found in the attached flyer.
*link is case sensitive*
We thank you in advance for your hard work and dedication to your students of all backgrounds. If possible, please print out the attached flyer to hand out to students and/or post them around your campus.
Please let us know if you have any questions or need anything else from us to outreach to the students at your school! You may contact us at reach...@gmail.com. We look forward to hearing from you and your students!
***Please note that our program is designed around the idea that our students will be those whose experiences are reflected in the REACH! mission statement. While we will not discourage students from other backgrounds from applying, REACH!’s ShadowNite focuses on the issues and politics for APIs in the U.S. as well as being a college resource. The bridges Multicultural Resource Center is comprised of many different Recruitment & Retention Centers (RRCs) and REACH! is one of seven such groups. If you would like, we can connect you with representatives from other RCCs (such as Raíces the Latinx/BIPOC RRC, BRRC the Black RRC, INC the Indigenous and Native Coalition RRC, etc.) for you to learn about what programs they may offer for your student's school. Information on bridges and other RCCS can be found at http://bridges.berkeley.edu
With love and solidarity,
Natalie Nguyen
