ECHO PROJECTS:
“Project Jockey Box” – We had a great work day on the Jockey Box on Saturday. Kapn Ken hosted Project Day in his home garage, workshop, and brewery. Ken worked his magic on a smoked pork butt and his girlfriend made a tasty potato salad. Beverages were a communal affair as BB brought his famous Brown Ale and Iron Mike supplied some craft brews that he picked up on recent travels. Ken broke into his stash of Pear wine made from the huge pear tree in his back yard. Power tools and alcohol are not normally a good combination. So lunch and well, most of the beer tasting took place after we finished work for the day.

So what did we get done? First, we had to see what had caused the moisture damage to the exterior finish. It quickly became apparent that former owner(s) had added screws along the bottom that were so embedded and heads so deteriorated that they were impossible to remove. Ken managed to remove the bottom using a saber saw and bi-metal blade to cut through the screws and remove the bottom plate. Exposing the interior confirmed our suspicions...there is virtually no insulation in there. The galvanized metal box is held in place by a framework of furring strips and thin plywood with an air gap for insulation and tar paper for a moisture barrier. We discussed several options and ultimately decided to remove the internal wood framework and replace it with rigid foam. Gutting the box also allows us to refinish the metal box, insulate it and seal the interior surface of the Jockey Box to prevent further moisture damage to the exterior finish.
Of course deciding to gut the interior is different from actually doing so. Jesse led the way with a BFH and pry par as we carefully broke apart the internal structure while the rest of us struggled to stabilize the box. All the hardware was removed and the box was finally empty. While none of the oak is rotten, it certainly needs to be restored. Most of the joints are loose and the side panels float loosely in a tongue and groove frame. Ken is taking over to clean, clamp and glue the main box. He then is going to epoxy paint the interior wood, prime the metal box, and wrap it in 1-1/2 of rigid foam insulation. We agreed to reconvene in a week and hopefully have everything necessary to reassemble the box and start plumbing it for use. The final steps will be to add feet, give the box a nice coat of Tung oil, reattach all the restored hardware, and attach an acrylic panel to the rear for our sign and tap list.
