We're into the depths of winter, but after this big storm passes by, we should all be able to get out again. So far the long range forecast looks good for our dance on February1.
Our good friend Elizabeth Freedman will be our caller; she has a lively group of dances ready to warm us up (see videos below). Our musicians will be: Alan Thomson, our local stalwart keyboardist; Dominick Landowne, a new-to-us fiddler; and Sue Polanski, a longtime clarinetist familiar to folks in the Hudson Valley and beyond (see bios below).
A couple of reminders:
- Our weather protocol is as follows. It is rare for us to call off a dance. However, if weather conditions should warrant cancellation, we will notify you via email by 11 a.m. , at the latest.
- Our health protocol is as follows. Please stay home if you feel sick or have symptoms of Covid, flu or a cold.
Looking forward to dancing with you soon!
Elizabeth Freedman, Caller
Elizabeth began English country dancing thirty five years ago and has
taught and performed both English country dance and Scandinavian
couple turning dances for at least 20 years. She is a regular caller at
CDNY and has called for English Country dances in Westchester, Stockbridge, Germantown (Philadelphia) and Albany. She has also called for Circle Lodge weekends and taught English Country dance workshops for the New York City chapter of the Jane
Austen Society of North America. Elizabeth is originally from the Capital District but now shares her time between here and the NYC area.
Alan Thomson, Keyboard
Alan, a multi-genre pianist, is an active performer at numerous
festivals, dances, and concert settings involving classical, jazz, swing,
traditional contra, English Country dance, and musical theater. He
holds a Master's Degree of Performance on Piano from the College of
St. Rose. As a piano instructor,
he teaches in as many styles as he performs.
Alan is founder and leader of the Alan Thomson Little Big Band and
is one of the founding members of the contradance trio, Contravention.
Alan lives in the Capital District.
Dominick Landowne, Fiddle
Dominik grew up in the folk dancing scene with parents who were dancers. As a graduate of Chicago School of Violin Making, he works full time for an instrument rental company repairing violins, violas and cellos and rehairing bows. Classical violin training began at 9 years old and he has played ever since. For about five years, he has played regularly in English Country dance bands, both in Ridgewood, NJ and Westchester Co. (with Serendipity). Dominik comes to us from New York City.
