Do you ever look back on something you created ten years ago and think, knowing what you know now: “I could do a much better job of this”? Well, that's how I’ve been feeling lately when I look back at some of my old dance videos. Since my early days, I have accumulated new techniques that I can employ to improve some of this work.
I can start by shortening the video, cutting out imperfect rounds of the dance. Then I can add dance instructions, sheet music and clearer credits – all things I’ve incorporated into my videos more recently. And finally, with newly available techniques, I can improve the sound quality.
Of course, not all old videos are worth the effort. But I thought my "Lambs on Green Hill" (Dec 2016) video deserved an update, as it's a pleasurable dance – set to a beautiful tune, played by a talented band and performed well.
A drawback to re-doing old videos is that, though I take renewed delight in seeing the dancing, I’m also flooded with sadness – missing old friends who have left us and wishing I could turn back the clock to those sparkling times.
Still, capturing dancers in some of their happiest moments is always worth the effort for me knowing that this is surely how we’d all like to be remembered.
