SV Odyssey of the Mind Newsletter 2-17-2011

Tournament Updates

We have 88 teams registered for the Silicon Valley Odyssey of the Mind Regional Tournament on Saturday, March 5, 2011. That is 8 more teams than last year, so we continue to grow.  We have completed training all the judges for the tournament and they are ready and excited to see all your teams’ creative problem solutions! We really appreciate all the parents, friends and co-workers who have stepped up to volunteer their time to make this all volunteer program such a great experience for all the kids involved.

The tournament schedule is completed and will be posted on the svomer.org website in the next couple of days. However the following teams have not registered their tournament day volunteers yet so they will not appear on the schedule until their volunteers are registered. We are still waiting for these volunteers to register to complete the volunteer schedule for the tournament. If your team is listed below and you think you have a volunteer registered please contact Barbara K. at dire...@svomer.org as soon as possible.  To Register a Volunteer Click here!

Buchser Middle School - Problem 4, Div. II – Coach Mike Filla

Carolyn Clark Ele Sch - Problem 4, Div. I – Coach Harshad Parehk

Challenger School Ardenwood -  Problem 3, Div. II – Coach Vani Gangu

Hopkins JHS -  Problem 2, Div. II – Coach Heena Majmudar

Mission San Jose Ele Sch -  Problem 2, Div. I – Coach Shaw Sun

Quimby Oak Middle Sch – Prob. 2, Div. II – Coach Rao Tallapragada

Sacred Heart School – Prob. 5, Div. II – Coach Selena Kellinger

We will be posting the tournament volunteer job schedule by the middle of next week. Volunteers who provided an email address on their registration will be contacted by email with details about their job duties.

Team Scheduling Requests & Conflicts

Several teams have made scheduling requests.  All requests have been taken into consideration to the best of our abilities. Not all requests can be honored due to logistical problems.  So if you have made a request that involves only 1 or 2 team members or an assistant coach please consider alternate back-up plans.  We would like to remind you that we emphasized in coach training that teams should plan to spend the whole day at the tournament. I know this causes a lot of stress for teams and it causes us a lot of stress too! So please be patient. No further schedule change requests can be made at this time.

Team Rosters

We sell tournament t-shirts and sweatshirts as well as other souvenirs at the Regional Tournament. The tournament t-shirts can be printed with the team members’ names on them. Any changes to spellings of team member names or additions of team members that occur after this Friday will not be reflected on the tournament t-shirts. The t-shirt design with the team rosters goes in to our vendor this weekend.

Tournament Day Procedures

We will be sending out a long newsletter next week with tournament day procedures and recommendations. It will include the time for the awards ceremony, a campus map, parking information and much more logistical info.

California Odyssey of the Mind Scholarships for High School Seniors

California Odyssey of the Mind has created a scholarship program to recognize and reward students who have demonstrated creative problem-solving skills, outside the box thinking, dedication to the program and a desire to share their experiences with others. California Odyssey of the Mind is the non-profit organization that administers the competitions and Odyssey of the Mind program in California.  To learn more about these two $500 scholarships and get the application form go to the Calomer website.

The deadline for applying for these scholarships is March 1 and they will be awarded at the California State tournament on March 26.

We're coming down the home stretch! The excitement should be building.
AND DON'T FORGET TO KEEP CHECKING THOSE CLARIFICATIONS!

Another option is an older sibling...if they need volunteer hrs, they can easily get it here and help the team.

And don't forget to fill out all the required forms.

Just 2 more weekends...Good luck.
