The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) is working with a number of groups the to safeguard the voting rights of Asian American voters during the 2008 Presidential Primary Elections .
Asian Americans have faced a series of obstacles in exercising their right to vote, such as lack of interpreters, hidden translated materials, rude and hostile poll workers.
Then, when the news media reported on election returns and the vote by specific groups, Asian Americans were overlooked.
In response, AALDEF has conducted non-partisan voter surveys and monitored poll sites for compliance with the Voting Rights Act, which forbids anti-Asian voter discrimination.
We are seeking volunteers to help survey voters at poll sites in New York (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queen), New Jersey (Bergen County), and Virginia (Centreville, Annandale).
Volunteers work in one or more 3-hour shifts during the Presidential Primary Elections on February 5 in NY and NJ and February 12 in Virginia. There will be a one-hour training session for all volunteers:
