I've done three separate installs of OPML Editor using the EC2ForPoets guide.  Each time I come to roadblock at the same point: http://poets.scripting.com/#visitYourServer

When I visit the DNS I get a message that says: "The virtual host, ec2-xxx-xx-xxx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com, is not defined on this server."
  • OPML Editor is running fine and healthily in the cloud, I can RDC in (using CoRD) and install things like River2 and other tools. The Admin password is set.
  • In the OPML Server Preferences > External Name > the server name is the same as the one I copied from EC2, and the same as the browser. Elsewhere, the option for running the web server on Port:80 is selected.
  • The EC2 box seems to pass all tests sufficiently.
  • The Group Security settings for the instance are exactly as described in the Tutorial.
  • When I try to ping the IP or the DNS from the command-line, however, the request times out.
  • When I use the OPML option under 'Tools > River2' and select "Am I net-accessible?" the response is "Sorry, your computer is not net-accessible."
I can't find any way around this problem or any references that speak to it in the How To Guide, the Forum or after searching a number of sources including scripting.com.

Can anyone help?

Jon, when you say "visit the DNS" what exactly do you mean?

When you paste the domain into the address bar, try adding /opmlEditor to the end. (ex: http://ec2-xxx-xx-xxx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com/opmlEditor)

What's the name of your server so we can see if we can reach it?

Thanks, Ted, that was it.  I didn't realize opmleditor lived in subdirectory.  ;-)  D'oh!

Jon,

You're welcome. Since that was the answer, this means one of two things. Either:

1) There is a gap in the documentation at http://poets.scripting.com/#visitYourServer  OR

2) There is a bug and http://ec2-xxx-xx-xxx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com/ should have automatically redirected to /opmlEditor

I'll leave it to Dave to determine which is the case.

(I can also confirm I have the same behavior on my server at http://tbp.tedchoward.com)

Confirmed that it works.
