We are working on a couple of proposals related to Personalized Interactive Decision Support with the Net Benefit Calculator. If you can, please provide feedback on the one shared here, and/or let me know if you can collaborate with any of them.

In the United States, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) has established the EHIgnite Challenge to encourage people to "Develop tools, platforms, and workflows that transform raw EHI [Electronic Health Information] into usable, readable, and actionable information that supports clinical care, patient engagement, and informed decision-making."  The challenge rules and evaluation criteria are posted at https://ehignitechallenge.org/

We drafted a response to this challenge and you can view our draft at https://docs.google.com/document/d/19Fhbz38RTQA0swLgAEmRNdGzCIvyy0VA -- please feel free to provide any feedback; we will likely submit by the end of the month.

We are considering a research project related to it that would be responsive to an NIH R01 funding opportunity:  Personal Health Informatics for Delivering Actionable Insights to Individuals (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-25-235.html --- due dates are either June 5 or October 5.   Critical requirements for this opportunity include:

  • Applications should include end user engaged approaches and real-world evaluation to inform the design of generalizable, reusable, and scalable personal health informatics tools, systems, and platforms for the benefit of individuals in understanding and improving their health.
  • Applicants must base their proposed work on an informed profile of the individuals who are the intended end users and available data.
  • The work should be developed through interaction with the intended end users and are encouraged to follow principles of community engagement.
  • Applicants should plan to undertake one or more studies to test the feasibility of their ideas using real-world data and/or acceptability of developed research products with the intended user group

So basically we need a critical mass of engaged intended end users to participate in research regarding the acceptability of the Net Benefit Calculator. If you represent or can connect us with an organizational partner for this R01 grant, please let us know. The draft challenge proposal can give you an idea of the Net Benefit Calculator.  Or you check it out at https://NetBenefitCalculator.com
