Most of us picture prayer sort of like a monologue: We talk to God, sharing our heartfelt thanks and offering up our petitions and requests. But prayer is really more like a dialogue, where we speak with God and the Lord speaks to us.
I find it helpful in my prayer times to focus on which of the Holy Trinity I need to talk to. Often I talk to Jesus, the friend who is closer than a brother and the Savior of my soul. Other times I cry out to the Holy Spirit, who fills and empowers me to do the tasks Father God has called me to do. Having a distinct sense of who I am speaking to helps me formulate what I want to say and how I want to say it.
James 5:16 reminds us that if we want our prayers to be heard, our hearts need to be right with God and with one another. If you feel your prayers are bouncing off the ceiling, take some time to check your heart.
We generally pray four or five times during our order of worship and each prayer generally lasts for 2 to 5 minutes. For us, that would be a lot of repetitive background noise if we filled that time with music.
Music is really comforting when applied as Bob mentions. I find it much needed sometimes to drown out the volume of unnecessary Sunday conversations in the sanctuary.. and helps me focus on hearing from God and through the Spirit. Thanks Bob for sharing on this topic! : )
It may take time and focus to strip ourselves of our needs for validation and affirmation, for after a song or two usually we will realize we ourselves have moved on into worship and are enjoying it deeply. Brokenness is part of our human journey, and we bring ours with us every time we gather to pray and worship.
I take prayer time as a chance to create and be inspired by my original music that is soft and does not interfere with the service, but enhanses the prayer time. I would never play during a baptism nor other time. 99% of my congregation reported that they like instrumental music behind the prayer time. My choral director years ago used to play the choral pieces we were about to sing at half-speed (no mattter what) in a lower register on an organ during prayer time, and that ALWAYS helped. I do not personally like collective prayer, and I find myself wandering into my own time of prayer and worship during the collective prayer
Yesterday, the ministry group played one long note during the time someone prayed. I could hardly stand it. I finally held both ears shut. What is going on, I have heard that before and it is terribly distracting. I will leave the room next time I hear it.
I was at a prayer meeting last night where where music was being played, guitar picking a repetitive line. It became to where that was all I could hear and was very distracting. I even tried to cover my ears and stick my fingers in them. I think part of it was the redundancy of playing this 2 to 3 second repetitive note progression
Lord, I kneel before You in humble submission and pray that in Your mercy and kindness You would help me to simply let go of all the fears and worries, problems and doubts, guilt and disappointments that seem to be filling my heart and mind so often, during the course of a day.
Fill my hurting soul with Your love and peace I pray. Fill the emptiness and pain that is tearing my life asunder. Lord, You know what is in my heart and why I am going through this time of fear and worry. Help me Lord, to take every thought captive, to hand it over to You as it rears up in my mind, and help me to replace it with thoughts and words of Scripture that tell of Your great might and wonderful power.
Lord, You have told us to think about whatever is lovely and pure and holy and good, and I pray that You would help me to turn the eyes of my heart upon Jesus and look to Him day by day. In Jesus' name I pray,
At times Lord God I know the things in life will only get better. My heart is yours and yours alone. I no longer want to hurt myself because of how someone once treated me. I punish those who may actually be here just to help me get through hard times.

to all others so that soon they, too, may know You better
and love You more...

O loving and gracious God, Father of all, you

care. Your Church is continually in need of priests,
sisters and brothers to offer themselves in the service
of the gospel by lives of dedicated love. Open the
hearts of your sons and daughters to listen to your
call in their lives. Give them the gift of understanding
to discern your invitation to serve you and your
Church. Give them the gift of courage to follow your
call. May they have the spirit of young Samuel who
found fulfillment in his life when he said to you,
"Speak Lord, for your servant is listening." We ask
this through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer.

Father, hear the prayers of your people,
and bring to maturity the seeds you have sown
in the field of your Church.
May many of your people choose to serve you
by devoting themselves to the service
of their brothers and sisters.
Raise up worthy ministers for your altars
and ardent but gentle servants of the Gospel.
May those who follow in the footsteps of Christ your Son
grow, and provide by their way of life
a convincing sign of your kingdom
for the Church and the whole world.
May all the ministers of your Church

and persevering in their prayer,

Lord Jesus, we pray to you for the Catholic priesthood.
Give us more priests, but most especially we ask you
to give us holy priests. Messengers of a truth
that is all-encompassing and eternal, holy priests
who know how to offer this truth
to the people of their own time and place.
Holy men for today, priests firmly rooted in the tradition,
yet imbued with the spirit of this age.
They have undertaken a mission in your name, Lord.
May the reflection of your power in them always make it clear
that they are your witnesses.
Grant that they may conform their lives to the paschal mystery
that they celebrate each day in the Eucharist.
May they sense in this mystery the anxious hunger of the world
and of their own brothers and sisters for salvation.
May they know, despite this hunger,
how to respect the spiritual freedom of others;

I want to thank you for the encouragement to pray alway, I was struggling with my prayer life, cause sometimes I feel guilty about not giving enough to God when I wake up because I am rushing out and then on my way I would pray but with guilt.
I am just thanking you for this lovely idea about prayer and praying I do really try to pray all the time but in some situations and circumstances that life throws at one it does get difficult. In lockdown I have missed meeting with my church family . UUNTIL recently they started with telephone conference calls
