Roswell commuters: Brace for road work
Significant detours in store for drivers

Commuters who push their way through Roswell should prepare to build in extra time over the next year.

Three bridges in the city are scheduled for replacement or improvements, and the work is expected to result in significant detours.

The construction will affect Hembree, Grimes Bridge and Old Roswell roads.

In addition, beginning Monday, Warsaw Road will be closed for repairs. People who normally use the route should take Grimes Bridge Road and Holcomb Bridge Road instead. The work should be finished in two weeks, said Kimberly Johnson, a city spokeswoman.

The more substantial bridge replacement projects will begin this fall. But city and state transportation officials are prepping commuters now.

• On Aug. 2, officials will unveil the detour route and bridge design for the $1.35 million Hembree Road Bridge project. The public meeting will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hembree Park, 850 Hembree Road.

The bridge over Foe Killer Creek will be replaced, allowing space for pedestrians. Right-turn lanes will be created in some sections, as well as new curb, gutters and sidewalks.

Hembree Road at the creek will be closed through construction, which is expected to take about a year. The route is one of the few east-west roads in north Roswell.

The detour is expected to take commuters down Elkins Road and Alpharetta Highway, also known as Ga. 9.

• On Aug. 28, officials will discuss the bridge replacement for Westside Parkway at Old Roswell Road. The road is expected to be closed from Mansell Road to Sanctuary Parkway. The meeting on design issues and detour routes is from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Alpharetta Traffic Engineering offices, 1790 Hembree Road.

• On Sept. 4, a public information meeting will be held on the $3.8 million Grimes Bridge Road project. The meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. is at the Senior Recreation Center, 830 Grimes Bridge Road.

The bridge crosses Vickery Creek and will be replaced. The closure is expected to affect Grimes Bridge and Oxbo roads.

Grimes Bridge is less than a mile from Ga. 400, and is a significant route for commuters heading to the artery from south Alpharetta, west Roswell and east Cobb.

The state Department of Transportation expects to have the work under contract sometime before the end of the year. Construction may continue for 12 to 18 months.
