Sabercat Creek, Site 4 (see directions in description below, from)
Quema Drive and Paseo Padre Pkwy
Fremont, CA 94539
We will be at Sabercat Historical Park Habitat Restoration Site 4 and surrounding trails for an extra habitat restoration day. Please see the description below for detailed directions.
Join us for a morning of habitat restoration! Your work will help increase native plant diversity and improve food and shelter for wildlife. Our main tasks will be repairing, removing or expanding browse protection cages, removing competing plants from basins of native trees and shrubs, transplanting native shrubs to areas needing erosion control, removing invasive plants throughout the site, and sheet mulching as needed. We will also spend time removing invasives from the patches of native grasses and wildflowers and other ungrazed areas along the trails nearby the site.
No experience is necessary. A habitat steward will guide you through the projects along Sabercat Creek in Sabercat Historical Park.
Heavy rain 12 hours prior will cancel or postpone the event. Once registered, look for an email notification of a cancellation/postponement, in case of recent rain.
Who: Volunteers of all ages are welcome! Children under the age of 12 require an accompanying adult.
Mandatory: A signed waiver form is required for each participant. No Waiver, No Participation!!!
This volunteer opportunity will fulfill community service hours. Please bring any forms needed to be signed.

Where: Site 4 and nearby trails
From the trailhead at Quema Drive, just off of Paseo Padre Parkway in Fremont, CA, walk down the hill (generally south). We'll meet where the path T’s into the trail along the creek (see the star on the map). I'll park the red truck there. Some of the group will weed out invasives along the trail in areas the goats have not grazed (or where they missed purple starthistle). Another portion of the group will turn east and head through the cattle gate to site 4 (highlighted in yellow) which will be on your right, stretching from the fence to the Paseo Padre Parkway underpass).
Those bringing cars usually park along Quema Drive and Noria Road. For weekday after-school work parties, those coming from Mission San Jose High School could take AC Transit Route 624 to the stop near Paseo Padre Parkway and Quema Drive, but would need to arrange for alternate transportation home. For those coming via BART, you could take AC Transit 212 and 210, or 217 and 210. It looks like the closest stop is at Washington Blvd. and Palm Ave.

Required: All participants must sign a waiver form; minors under 18 years of age must bring a waiver form signed by a parent or legal guardian. A new signed waiver is required for each event. Children 12 or under require an accompanying adult.
Caution:
Our sites include some invasive poison hemlock, which is poisonous if eaten, and skin contact with it may result in a rash. There is also a lot of native poison oak around the edges of some sites, and in some cases in areas where we might be walking. Most of it is marked with red-painted stakes. Some sites have native stinging nettle, although most of it is marked with flagging tape, too. Contact with this plant might result in stings and temporary discomfort. It should be possible for those who are sensitive to these plants to avoid them. We will have rubbing alcohol and Tecnu along to remove oils/irritants from poison oak and poison hemlock. Additionally, Site 5 has two very active honeybee hives in/on logs. If you have an allergy to bee stings, it might be wise to bring your epi-pen. The site is very large, so we should be able to have sensitive individuals work on the other side of the site, but it never hurts to be prepared. Pacific Coast ticks have sometimes been found in the park. This tick does not transmit Lyme disease, but we still advise volunteers to check their bodies (especially exposed skin) for ticks after the work day. Most of our restoration sites include somewhat steep slopes that volunteers should be able to walk up and down in order to participate.
There are 5 different restoration sites located along Sabercat Creek. Once you are registered you will receive a notification of any changes in location or schedule (e.g., due to heavy rain) via an email from Eventbrite.

Schedule of future work days:
Sabercat Creek Habitat Restoration work parties are scheduled for the 1st Saturday of each month (except Sept 2018, and Nov 2018, when it'll be the second Saturday), from 9am-noon. There will be additional work days as needed. We will also be holding occasional creek clean-ups. If you are looking for hours beyond those we offer at Sabercat, there are likely to be work days hosted by the City of Fremont Environmental Services Division at Stiver's Lagoon in Fremont's Central Park, too.
Cheers
