Come Join the Kick-off for the Sunol Wildflower Meadow Restoration Project!Sunday, November 2, 9:00-12:00 am, followed by socializing and snacks
Volunteers are sought to launch the first workday of a new and amazing project - the restoration of a six acre oak savannah-bunchgrass/wildflower meadow, which is located right in the heart of Sunol Wilderness. This event will take place on Sunday, Nov. 2, from 9:00-12:00 am. The complete address and additional information will be provided upon registration.
Volunteers will learn: to identify native and exotic plant species in detail, advanced weeding techniques, and skills in seed collecting and planting. Work will be typical hands-and-knees type gardening work, physical and active. Bring your own gardening gloves; tools will be supplied. Stick around afterward for snacks and socializing!
This meadow already has a great set of native plants to anchor the restoration: sixty-three native species have been found to date, including grand valley oaks, needle grass, wild rye, mule's ears, owl's clover, California golden violet, popcorn flower, and many others.
The multi-year task is to remove the threatening invasives, stop their seeding, and exhaust their seedbank in the soil. With enough volunteers, this special meadow patch of California can be put on a healing path to recovery and glory.
The project is a collaboration between East Bay Regional Parks and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (San Francisco's water company).
The hope is that this project will attract a core of volunteers committed to future, weekly restoration efforts, which will take place on Saturdays. (Only the launch will be held on a Sunday.) Come on out for this inaugural event: get some exercise, make a friend, and do the Earth good!
Registration is required: sign up here.
