Is it possible that this side of the pepper was rubbing constantly
against a stem of support pole?

This also looks like blossom end rot.I spoke to Mike at Ferris Farms about it on the tomatoes yesterday evening.He said not to over react,this often happens to the first fruits after a rainy season. Adding the normal ration of fertilizer will usually bring things around.  Tony
