Free passes to Interstellar Rodeo, Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Fringe Festival, Symphony Under the Sky
Interstellar Rodeo
Friday, July 26 thru Sunday, July 28
EBC is providing 30 bike racks to the Interstellar Rodeo in Hawrelak Park so festival attendees can bike and park securely. This sold-out festival includes performances from Alabama Shakes, Sarah Harmer, Shout Out Out Out Out, Elliott Brood, Serena Ryder and Steve Earle (and many more!).
We need volunteers to help monitor the bike parking. Each volunteer will receive a free weekend pass to the festival (for when you're not watching the bikes!).
This role involves sitting at the bike parking compound, greeting people and answering questions relating to the bike parking and EBC, and ensuring that bikes aren't stolen. Bring a book or a friend, and enjoy! To volunteer, e-mail in...@edmontonbikes.ca with your availability.

Edmonton Folk Music Festival
Thursday, August 8 thru Sunday, August 11
EBC will be providing bike repair services at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival this year, in their new, relocated and expanded bike parking compound. New Bonnie Doon parking restrictions mean even more people will be encouraged to bike!
Tickets to the folk fest sold out within hours of going on sale. Performers include Bruce Cockburn, Charles Bradley, Neko Case, Feist, the Head and the Heart, Alex Cuba, Rosanne Cash and Loreena McKennitt.
Specific hours will be determined at a later date, but mechanics will be expected to work 3 hours. On the day that the mechanic is working, they will also receive a working badge that entitles them to enter the festival when they're not at the bike lock-up.
One mechanic is needed for each day of the festival (August 8-11). E-mail in...@edmontonbikes.ca to volunteer.
Edmonton Fringe Festival
August 15-August 25
EBC is loaning bike racks to the Fringe, and will be providing a few hours of free bike repair services. Last year, we fixed bikes Friday evenings during Fringe.
We'll have a total of 4 mechanic shifts over the course of the festival this year. Volunteer mechanics receive a 6-pack of tickets to see any show, which can be used to see 6 separate shows or to share with friends. If you would like to volunteer as a mechanic, please e-mail in...@edmontonbikes.ca and we will determine the best dates and times for this year's festival.
Symphony Under the Sky
Friday, August 30-Monday, September 2
For many years, EBC has partnered with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra to provide supervised bike parking at Symphony Under the Sky in Hawrelak Park. Once again, we'll be there! Volunteers receive a ticket to a performance. Volunteer for two shifts, and you can get a pair of tickets so you can attend with your friend. Or better yet, volunteer with your friend!
This is the same bike monitoring role as with the Interstellar Rodeo: no mechanical experience is needed, as you'll just be making sure bikes are safe.
The performances this year include Mozart, Tchaikovsky & Dvořák, Proms In The Park, From Broadway to Hollywood, Family Matinee: Menagerie of Music, Ellis Hall Celebrates Ray Charles, Motown & Beyond, and Carnival of the Animals.

June was Bike Month
Thanks to everyone that helped make Bike Month happen, especially Karly and the Bikeology crew, who helped coordinate a calendar that included nearly 50 events (in 30 day!). Bravo for your incredible work. We made it through the rain
Are you interested in helping Bike Month to happen again next year, as it has for over a decade? VELO, the non-profit that coordinates Bike Month, is in need of people to get involved, without which Bike Month might not happen next year. E-mail in...@bikeology.ca to learn more about how you can help out, whether it's helping plan the event calendar for next year or pick the movie line-up or connecting with a local restaurant or bike shop, even if you can only make a small commitment, it would be invaluable!

Strathcona Complete Streets Bike-in
Thanks to the Strathcona Complete Streets group for putting on a fantastic bike-in event in June. On a gorgeous Saturday, they set up bike racks in two parking stalls across from the Old Strathcona Farmers's Market. Paying for the two parking meters, they converted the two stalls into a 32-bike space (and filled it), and handed out free pedal-powered smoothies while telling people about the bike boulevard plans for 83 Ave.
Thanks to everyone that made it happen, and especially to Leslie!

On-Street Bike Parking Survey
The City of Edmonton has installed 4 bike corrals in Old Strathcona and 1 on 124th St (finally!). You can read details, including a map of the locations, on the City's website.
The City is looking for public feedback on its bike corrals and the new pilot locations through an on-line survey. Do you want bike corrals on 104 St downtown? 102 Ave? What do you think of the current locations and designs? Please take a moment to fill out the survey!

We are looking for 5 volunteers for the next session of The Spoke. Please consider volunteering and working with the kids to help us keep this program running. We have a waiting list of kids that already extends into November, so if you can help out, it's a great way to become a mentor and make a difference in your community. E-mail sp...@edmontonbikes.ca for more information: it's just 2 hours once a week, and you don't need advanced mechanical skills! (It's not really just about the bikes; it's about relationships.)
Additionally, if you are interested in helping with administrative aspects of the program, such as: connecting with families and youth, documenting procedures, or any of the other behind-the-scenes work; please get in touch to learn how you can contribute. Even just a couple hours each week could be extremely helpful.

CAN-BIKE II On-road Cycling Course
|
|
|
CAN-BIKE 2 is the only nationally-certified on-road vehicular cycling training program in Canada. CAN-BIKE 2 provides a place for experienced cyclists to improve their skills and for professional cyclists to become certified. The program is an 18-hour course spread over two weekday evenings and two weekend days. The evenings are largely theory and the days are riding.
Tentative dates for the next CAN-BIKE 2 class are Wednesday August 7, Saturday August 10, Wednesday August 14, and Saturday August 17, 6:30pm to 10pm Wednesday evenings and 9am to 4 pm Saturdays.
The cost is $80 (free to EBC volunteers), and course manuals can be borrowed at no-cost or purchased for $35.
If you wish to take your CAN-BIKE training even further, you can also become a certified instructor. In September, there will be a 2-day instructor training course. Please contact John for details.

Critical Lass is an inclusive ride for female cyclists in street clothes, on a route suitable for novice riders, to promote cycling as an approachable, fun, everyday activity. It’s organized by the Loop-Frame Love co-bloggers in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada since June 2010, and has since spread from Edmonton to several cities internationally.

The Board of Directors currently has two vacancies which need to be filled as soon as possible. This is a great way to contribute to EBC if you share the vision of a bike-friendly Edmonton, and to shape the way EBC’s various programs develop. All interested cyclists are encouraged to apply, and we are particularly seeking members that have skills or interest in non-profit management, accounting, grant writing, fundraising, or local advocacy. We are a growing organization with lots of projects on the go, and good governance is crucial to our success.
Candidates who put themselves forward now, but are not appointed immediately, will also be contacted in early September and asked to put themselves forward at the election to be held at our AGM on October 6.
Board members appointed now will serve until the end of November, and will need to stand for election at the AGM to continue past that date, so this is an opportunity to try it out before committing to a full term.

Ride the Trail for Elizabeth Sovis
|
|
|
|
Elizabeth Sovis, of Edmonton, greatly enjoyed cycling the Trans Canada Trail each summer, but she was dismayed that the many impassable and incomplete sections made it necessary to travel on dangerous roads and highways.
She decided to take retirement from her work as a speech-language pathologist on July 1, 2013 in order to promote the development of safe cycling trails in Canada.
On Saturday, July 14, 2012, while cycling on Prince Edward Island – and only minutes after leaving the Trans Canada Trail – Elizabeth was struck and killed by a motor vehicle.
To honour the memory of his wife, her life and her vision, Edmund Aunger, her husband, who was cycling with her at the time, is cycling the Trans Canada Trail from Victoria to Charlottetown, in five stages, beginning in July 2013 and finishing in July 2017.
Edmund's goal is to promote the completion of a Trail that will be accessible and passable and safe.
Ed is currently cycling in BC, and you can follow his progress and send him messages at https://twitter.com/ridethetrail4/. He'll be arriving back in Edmonton in late August, when we'll welcome him back publicly. Details to be announced next month.
