Bike Month 2011 Newsletter

Chain grease on your leg, quietly gliding down the streets, stopping to chat with a friend who you see as you ride by, breezy midnight rides, and getting lots o' sunshine make cycling around town wonderful. I'd also agree with Kasey Klimes that bicycles are the key to better cities.  Get out to one of the many excellent cycling events this month and you'll be sure to feel healthy and meet some good people!

The EBC staff (Alex Hindle, BikeWorks Coordinator, and myself)  are excited to be joined by our new summer staff members:
  • Michael Brisbois is our Cycling Education Coordinator who will teach you how to be a safe and effective on-road urban cyclist through courses for new and experienced cyclists;
  • Jayson de Vera is our Bicycle Events Coordinator who will bring EBC services and outreach to your community events and festivals;
  • Leila Sidi & Kim Smith are collaborating as Artists-in-Residence and will inspire you with fun and/or functional pieces which promote cycling culture in Edmonton
Peace & pedal grease,

Anna Vesala

A flash mob took over 2 downtown parking stalls at noon on June 1 to kick off Bike Month and prepare for Park(ed).

EBC Membership Drive

As the only not-for-profit cycling education and advocacy organization in Edmonton, EBC relies on member support to continue providing our services and programs.  If you value what EBC does, become a member to support our work!

More members means that EBC has a stable funding base to run and expand programs in the city, and gives commuting cyclists in Edmonton a louder and more effective collective voice.

Volunteer orientations in June
Shops hosts, mechanics, advocacy work, info displays and summer events positions are all up for grabs. EBC welcomes all volunteers with an interest in cycling (no bike mechanic experience necessary).  If this interests you, please sign up for one of the orientations here.

Rags!
Breaking news: BikeWorks received a large donation of rags!  (Thanks Kim!) No more half-dirty rags to wipe down your bike.  Happy days.

Bike Lanes!

This summer, the City of Edmonton will install 18 km of bike lanes and sharrow markings on:
  • 76 Avenue (Gateway Boulevard to Saskatchewan Drive)
  • 106 Street (51 Avenue to Saskatchewan Drive)
  • Saddleback Road
  • 97 Street (34 Avenue to 83 Avenue)
See a map of the new infrastructure. These additions are part of Phase 1 of the Bicycle Transportation Plan. The BTP calls for the addition of more than 500 kms of on-street bicycle facilities!.

For updates on future bike lane projects, subscribe to the City's email list. Email cyc...@edmonton.ca with the subject "subscribe to bicycle routes."
