How would you like to earn $325 an hour for EBC by hanging around fellow cyclists while eating free food? Over the two days of our last casino event, volunteers helped us to receive over $72000 through our casino licence. This makes a huge difference for our activities and operations, and you can help too.
Our next casino is July 19-20, and we need volunteers to help during the event. You don't need any experience, nor do you need to have any familiarity with casinos. You don't even need to be an EBC member to help out (so get your friends to volunteer with you!). In fact, volunteers receive a free membership/renewal. A variety of shifts are available (various roles and hours) to suit your schedule.

A bicycle is only as good as its wheels. Register for our hands-on wheels workshop this evening (Friday, June 22!) and you will learn how to repack bearings, true the rims by adjusting spoke tension, and keep your wheels rolling smoothly for thousands of more miles. Space is very limited, so e-mail us right away at cou...@edmontonbikes.ca to register.
We will look inside the wheel hubs, the heart of the bicycle, then turn our attention to the rim and the art & science of truing wheels, including lateral true, removing hops, and dishing. You’ll learn how to replace a broken spoke and a bent axle, in addition to tips to prevent either from happening again. For other courses, see our course calendar »

Volunteers needed for EBC's biggest single funding source
Dear Members and Friends of the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters' Society,
If you've wanted to volunteer your time for EBC but haven't had a chance before, or if you really want to make a few volunteers hours count, please consider signing up for a shift at our casino on July 19-20. As you may know, this is a requirement for us to access important provincial funding.
The roles we need to fill are quite easy and can be performed by anyone, but it's critical that we show up with the requisite number of people. There are day shifts (approximately 11am-7pm) and night shifts (approximately 6pm-3 am) available. You'll get a free meal, and are likely to have some time free for socializing, snacking, and book-reading!
Duties include: chip runner (sit in a room and watch television or read until you are called to bring chips to a table); cashier (buy chips back from the customers, possibly get reading or knitting done); banker (sign people in and out with the computer, count money with a fancy machine); count room (count money a LOT).
The location: Palace Casino at West Edmonton Mall. Rideshares will be organised. Note that this is different from where we have traditionally held our casino events.
Please contact Micah to sign up or for more info: mi...@edmontonbikes.ca. Volunteers able to help both days are especially appreciated, but let us know if you'd like to help out for just one day. Please include your phone number, and preferred role and time, if any.

Changes at BikeWorks
We're constantly working to improve BikeWorks. We'll be transitioning to a new system with volunteer hosts that will manage the shop, helping everyone (including our volunteers) to have a better experience. You'll already see a lot of changes in the South location if you visit. What? You haven't visited recently? Then come check things out!

Summer Bike Shop Coordinator
Welcome to Justin Bartlett, our summer bike shop coordinator. He's been working with us for just over a month, helping us as we grow and restructure (and doing a fantastic job!). In his own words:
Hi, I’m Justin and I’m the new Community Bicycle Workshop Coordinator with EBC/BikeWorks. I’ve been using my bike to explore hidden treasures in our river city for the past 3 years, and the volunteers at BikeWorks have played a huge part in helping me get my wheels on the road. I’m currently in my second term on the Board of Directors of APIRG, and I’m excited to bring my experience community organizing and managing volunteers to work for EBC. If you want to contact me with questions, concerns, or ideas, drop me a line at jus...@edmontonbikes.ca

SE to West LRT Surveys
1% of capital projects is spent on art. What do you think of " bike parking as public art" at LRT stations?
How about making it easy to use light rail for the long stretches of your commute, and biking to and from platforms for either end of your trip? Good bike route connections and trains that accomodate bikes are critical to making that work.
Feedback from the Spring 2012 Community Conversations was used to develop options for how the LRT and its amenities will look, feel and integrate in each area. The City wants to hear from you again! Tell the design team how you envision these concepts fitting into your community, and learn how pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and residents will interact with the Southeast to West LRT.
The southeast and city centre consultations are done, though the City Centre West to Lewis Farms consultations have yet to happen. If you missed the LRT consultations, you can still submit your feedback online. Just go to the project website and find the survey for your area.
You also have until midnight, June 24 to complete a separate online survey about the new bridge that will replace the Cloverdale Pedestrian Bridge. The existing bridge will be closed and removed during construction of the new bridge, which will impact cyclists that normally use that route. The design of the new bridge will greatly impact how we interact with the space: the current pedestrian bridge is a wonderful place to stop and enjoy the river. So add your voice!

125 St & 104 Ave Parkette
Community members, including several members of EBC, recently organized around saving trees in the 125 St & 104 Ave Parkette. This important neighbourhood park (which also serves as a marvelous connection between the 127 St and 102 Ave bike routes) was slated to have a number of its trees removed, but thanks to efforts of the community, the trees have been spared (for the near future). The Westmount Community League is now currently working to improve and expand the park. Congratulations!
Cyclists, take note: you might find yourself using this park even more when the 102 Ave bridge over Groat Road (constructed in 1910) is replaced, tentatively scheduled to happen in 2014-2015.

Coronation District Park Development
Coronation District Park will be the site for the development of a community recreation centre in close proximity to Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre. The City is exploring the opportunity of a potential partnership to incorporate an indoor cycling track in the centre. The community recreation centre will also include a fitness centre, gymnasium, multipurpose rooms and child play space.
In connection to the project, TELUS World of Science has developed a Master Plan that includes redevelopment and expansion of the facility to achieve their mission to create a positive science and technology culture through the delivery of programs and services.
