  • If you purchase or renew a Supporting membership or set up a recurring payment before May 1, 2013, you'll also be entered in a draw to win a 900-lumen bike light! Similar to this $146 light from MEC, the prize also includes a handlebar mount, head mount and double-capacity battery.
  • Existing Supporting-level members and those who already have recurring payments are automatically entered in this draw.
Set up a recurring payment by May 1 at http://edmontonbikes.ca/membership/ to be entered to win this light! EBC volunteers are entered in a separate draw for a second light.

You Can Ride Two

Goldbar Park

http://youcanridetwo.ca/

This learn to ride class has been running for over 10 years with the support of EBC. Volunteers are paired up with children 8 and older who are unable to ride a two wheeler and help them to master this skill of childhood.  The success rate for this program is over 80%. The program will run Thursday evenings over 5-8 weeks in Goldbar Park (weather dependent and class dependent).

We need 15 to 20 assistant instructors who are experienced bicyclists and/or occupational or physical therapists. Some formal training such as CAN-BIKE is welcomed, but not required. There is a detailed course outline to assist new instructors and bring return instructors back up to speed.

Please e-mail John Collier <jbco...@shaw.ca> know if you can help out.

Community Bike Rodeos

Friday, May 10 from 1pm-3pm. King Edward School (8525 101 St)
Saturday, May 11 from 11am-3pm. Elves Special Needs Society (10419 159 St)
Sunday, May 19 from 12pm-2pm
http://youcanridetwo.ca/

A bike rodeo involves a number of cycling activities and games to improve skills and have fun!

On Friday, May 10, we are assisting with the King Edward School bike rodeo and are looking for volunteers to help with bike inspections and to run rodeo stations in the afternoon.

On Sunday, May 19 we are assisting with a bike rodeo at Ottewell Community League from 12-2 pm, and need help with stations there.

For those children that are unable to learn to ride a two wheeled bicycle, EBC has paired up with a number of other agencies to create an adapted bicycle loan pool. Volunteers are required to help fix up these bikes so that they can be loaned out to families. On Saturday, May 11, we are hosting our first adapted bike rodeo. Children will be matched with an adapted bicycle and have the opportunity to participate in some fun events on their "new" bikes.  We are looking for volunteers from 11am-3pm to help with fitting, maintenance and fun!

If you can help in any of these roles, please e-mail us.

Advocacy

Transportation Committee Meeting

Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 1:30pm, River Valley Room, City Hall

On March 13, EBC organized a number of cyclists to speak at City Hall. Most of the 20 residents that presented to the Transportation Committee spoke in favour of the bike lanes. Presenters in favour of the bike lanes included medical and research doctors, business owners, and community members.

We also helped to organize a letter, signed by 20 local physicians, urging councillors to go ahead with the bike lane plan.

You can read about the meeting on CBC, but you'll find the most in-depth article in the Edmonton Sun. (Kudos to Angelique Rodrigues for paying attention through the 4 hour meeting.)

You can also watch video of the meeting. You can view Administration's presentation while you listen, and hear all of the presentations and Q&A.

One of the most bizarre aspects of the debate was the argument that reducing automobile traffic in front of schools would make those roads more dangerous. The route in question, 132 Ave, has been taken off the plans for this year, to be revisited when the entire length of 132 Ave is rebuilt, with plans for a complete bike route.

In all, the Transportation Committee spent 4 hours debating the bike lanes (which had an expected cost of about $1.5 million, significantly less than many other items receiving much less attention).

The final carried motions were:
  • That Administration consult with the stakeholders in regards on the 121 Avenue and 76 Avenue community needs including safety, handicap parking, parking issues for residents and access and parking to any area businesses and facilities with regard to the development of the recommended bicycle network, and provide the results of the evaluation in a report to Transportation Committee.

  • That Administration provide a report to Transportation Committee outlining the consultation process that took place with the stakeholders with respect to the installation of bike lanes including accompanying documentation.

    Due: June 12, 2013
This likely means a delay for 121 Ave and 76 Ave, which, while unfortunate, is not a terrible outcome by any means. We'll continue monitoring developments while focusing on Complete Streets Strathcona and West Downtown Complete Streets.

If you want to bring anything to our attention, please e-mail us.

EBC Advocacy Committee

EBC is seeking a new chair for our advocacy committee. Our current chair, Duncan Kinney, is stepping back to focus on other projects. You've seen how integral EBC's role is, as the only organized voice advocating for cycling in Edmonton. Please help us keep the momentum going! You can contact us at in...@edmontonbikes.ca.

West Downtown Complete Streets

Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 7pm, Grant MacEwan University Service Centre (10-600, top floor of West Parkade on 109 St, north of the Robbins Health Learning Centre on 104 Ave)

West Downtown Complete Streets (WDCS) is a working group composed of members of the Oliver Community League, Downtown Edmonton Community League, students and other community residents, as well as interested stakeholders and the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters’ Society.

WDCS is advocating for safe and comfortable bicycling infrastructure in Oliver and Downtown as highlighted in the Bicycle Transportation Plan.

With the 102 Ave Bridge Over Groat Road project design in question, there is an opportunity to advocate for improved cycling infrastructure. A high density of cyclists, LRT development through downtown, and a historical lack of cycling infrastructure in the downtown all mean this area is now a top priority, both for EBC, the communities involved, and also the City itself, which has identified both downtown and 83 Ave as their top priorities for cycling infrastructure in 2014.

Join the WDCS mailing list to learn more and get involved.
