EBC is a non-profit society dedicated to making Edmonton a more livable city by supporting active transportation.

There needs to be a change.

EBC is the voice for better cycling in Edmonton. From representing your interests at numerous City of Edmonton stakeholder consultations and committees (covering everything from bridges, LRT and bike lanes to river valley signage and complete streets), to actively providing the tools to enable everyone to enjoy cycling, with two community bike workshops teaching on-road riding skills and mechanic courses, and programs for youth and special needs children, we offer a lot.

Thank you for your support. We still need it: please renew your membership (there are ever more benefits) to lend us your voice and financial support.

As you know, the proposed 2013 on-street bike routes have become a major issue in the city:

EBC is, of course, in the thick of things, but we need you to be a part of this process.

What's next, and what can you do?

  1. Complete the online survey before February 27. City administration will use this to improve the routes, as well as to measure support.
  2. Write to your councillor. Please e-mail your councillor directly; our website CycleEdmonton.ca has an example letter and a tool to find your ward and councillor's e-mail. State your neighbourhood and your support for the bike lanes. You can also peruse our Bike Lane FAQ for more info.
  3. Attend the Transportation Committee meeting on March 13 at City Hall (River Valley Room). This is the meeting where the report requested by Mayor Mandel will be presented. If you like, you may request to speak at the meeting, but just being present and interested is a help.
  4. Renew your membership.
You can view video of the February 13 meeting where the inquiry was made here. You can also watch a related item, about the parking impacts of bus stops, here.

Membership Discounts

We now have discounts for EBC members available at local partners. Acquired Taste Tea, Mike's Bikes, and The Paint Spot are currently confirmed, and we're expanding this program rapidly. The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra will once again be offering $20 tickets (including all fees) to EBC members for our annual Bike to the Symphony event.

Additionally, if you switch your electricity service provider to SPARK, they will donate $1.50/month to EBC. If you're already a SPARK customer, contact them to direct your admin fee towards EBC. This doesn't impose any additional costs on you: SPARK is donating a portion of their own money to EBC!

And if you're looking for a home energy assessment, our friends at C Returns donate $25 to EBC for each referral.

Do you know of a local business that would be interested in working with EBC? Please put us in touch with them!

Membership Renewal

The dates, they are a -changin'...

Has your EBC membership lapsed? Do you think of yourself as an EBC member, but haven't paid any membership dues in over a year? (You can check your membership status online now!)

Head over to our updated online member application form and renew your membership today. You can now pay just $2/month and never have to think about renewing again. Or make a one-time, multi-year payment and receive a discount. There are a lot of options: pick the one that's best for you.

You'll also notice that we've changed our renewal system. Expiry dates will now fall on either May 1 or November 1. Depending on when you renew, your membership will last a minimum of 8 months, but you could get 14 months, too.

If you renew now, your membership will be good until May 2014! If you already have an active membership purchased since September 2012, and renew now, for this one time only, we'll extend your membership until November 2014.

With these new changes, including discounts, that means that we'll begin mailing out membership cards once again, so if you've moved, please let us know.

A significant portion of our budget comes from membership fees. We use that money to support our many programs and services.

With an election coming in October, we're gearing up for a summer-long campaign, while continuing our work in various communities, including Complete Streets Strathcona and Oliver/Downtown. Please lend us your support!

Bike Racks for Businesses & Apartments

Support EBC and get a discount

Do you remember the bike corrals that were installed on Whyte Ave this summer?

Now you can order them for your business or apartment building through EBC. By collecting orders and ordering in bulk, we'll generate some revenue for EBC and still pass savings on to you.

Talk to your building manager today, and e-mail in...@edmontonbikes.ca for prices and to place an order!

Each rack needs only 4 bolts to install, and comes in 8-bike, 6-bike, or 4-bike configurations (102", 78", and 52" long respectively, and about 48" wide). The racks are manufactured locally by Special Metal Fabricating.

New Bike Store Opening

Now hiring, and offering 10% discount on all bikes and bike parts to EBC members

Here's a message from owner Mike Cotfas about Mike's Bikes:

I'm excited to announce the opening of Edmonton's newest bike shop, Mike's Bikes, which will open the doors to its Whyte Ave location in two short months! The shop will be geared (pun intended) mainly towards bicycle commuters, and to advancing the cause of making Edmonton the most bike-friendly city it can be. The shop will feature cruisers, comfort bikes, fixies as well as hybrids and even 29ers, by bike brands such as Felt, Raleigh, Diamondback and PureFix, and will offer full maintenance service to the public with a 24h turnaround time on tune-ups, at a rate that matches other local bike shops, or for EBC members only, at a reduced early-bird rate until March 1st, by appointment only. Starting March 1st, I am happy to extend a 10% discount on all bikes and bike parts, again available to EBC members only, as a trial program for the first season in business!

I have a number of positions to fill for experienced bicycle mechanics and salespeople with a background in bikes, as well as a passion for people. If that sounds like you, certainly drop me a line at the email address below, and emails inquiring about the early bird special should also be addressed to: mikesb...@gmail.com

Look forward to seeing you all at the shop!

Cheers,

Mike Cotfas

On-street Bike Routes 2013

You've come a long way, baby...

Cycling matters in Edmonton, and cycling infrastructure is the key to making Edmonton a comfortable, enjoyable place to ride.

And cycling has become one of the biggest topics in the city right now, in a way it never has been before. This, in itself, is progress.

Take a look at this antiquated City of Edmonton bikeway map (from the 80s? 90s? you tell me!).

Compare it to the Bike Facility Expansion Map 2013.

Well, it's incremental.

The key points to note are the black dotted lines in the 2013 map: they finally complete important network connections. But only if they actually get built.

The City recently held two public open houses regarding the 2013 bike routes (EBC attended stakeholder meetings prior to that). Cyclists came out to show their support, as well as to give their feedback on the proposed designs, and it made a big difference. Thank you.

You still have time to complete the survey about the routes. You can view route details on the City's website.

You can also read about EBC's view on the bike routes in our last newsletter, on our website, in our Bike Lanes FAQ, and in our letter to Mayor Mandel.

We also have a number of  presentations available regarding cycling in Edmonton.

8-80 Cities

Gil Penalosa was one of the keynote speakers at last year's Velo-City Global cycling conference. The Town of Devon is hosting Gil Penalosa from 8-80 Cities on March 14th for two presentations. Gil speaks to communities about creating a place where people can walk, bike, access transit, visit vibrant parks and public spaces no matter their age, ability or social status.
Watch a video of Gil speaking at a TEDx event, talking about who our streets are for.

Full project details are available on the City of Edmonton's website.

Queen Elizabeth Park Master Plan

Open House to review the draft Master Plan

Following consultations through 2012, the Queen Elizabeth Park Master Plan and report is being finalized, and will be presented to City Council for approval in 2013.

You can review the plans on the City's website.

Designing Edmonton

The City of Edmonton has two projects currently examining how neighbourhoods and streets are designed, which, of course, is an essential part of building a bike-friendly community.

Complete Streets are streets for everyone. They are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users. Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, truck drivers and public transportation users of all ages and abilities are able to safely move along and across a complete street.

Guidelines for Edmonton’s Developing Communities: The City has prepared design guidelines for new neighbourhoods to help us continue to build strong communities. These guidelines will inform the physical structure and layout of brand new neighbourhoods. They establish a collective vision for our new communities and will encourage them to develop in ways that are unique, innovative and sustainable.

You Can Ride Two

April 27, 2013 - June 15, 2013

EBC will be offering another Biking Group this spring for children aged 8-12 who are not yet riding a two wheeler. The program will run Thursday evenings over 5-8 weeks in Goldbar Park (weather dependent and class dependent).

We will run two concurrent courses:
  • for students who can follow verbal instruction from 6:00 P.M. to 6:45 P.M.
  • for students who need non-verbal instruction from 7:00 P.M. to 7:45 P.M.
We need 15 to 20 assistant instructors who are experienced bicyclists and/or occupational or physical therapists. Some formal training such as CanBike is welcomed but not required. There is a detailed course outline to assist new instructors and bring return instructors back up to speed.

Please feel free to pass this invite on to any knowledgeable cyclists, physical therapists or occupational therapists you know, and post it to anywhere you think suitable.

I teach a variety of courses during the year, all of them enjoyable, but this course is the most fun and rewarding of them all!

Thank you so very much,

John Collier

You Can Ride Too

Adapted Bicycle Loan Pool

For those that are unable to ride two-wheeled bicycles, EBC has started an adapted bicycle loan pool. Thanks to a grant from PC Children's Charity, we are able to purchase new adapted bicycles to build up the pool. You can view all of our sponsors on our website. Keep an eye on youcanridetwo.ca (currently under development) for more details about our programs.
