Bridgwater racing driver Alex Holford won his class championship in the
second round of the All-Wheel-Drive Club Championship at Cambridge.
Luck had been on Holford's side after he had been towed over the
finishing line in the previous round, but this time, he and navigator
Gwen Adair put in a top-five time.
"For a car that is up to 200 bhp less than some of the top cars, it was
exceptional," said a delighted Holford. "Each lap got faster and more
fun and we had no problems all day."
There were seven laps of a very slippery, six-mile course, which looked
deceptively easy but proved extremely tricky. Four of the top runners
were forced to retire, mainly from mechanical failure, and many slipped
off the course, but it suited Holford's driving style.
He finished seventh overall and first in class, which put him in the
lead overall in the class championship.
Holford drives a 3.5-litre four-wheel-drive Indy car with a BMW M30
engine producing around 260 bhp. He is sponsored by his own firm,
Apollo Environmental Services, Bridgwater Tyres and Fritz Bitz of
Wellington.
He is now looking forward to the next Championship round this Sunday at
Ebbw Vale, in south Wales.
