PROPERTY consultants Savills has been appointed as part of a team
drawing up redevelopment plans for the 200-acre former Corus steelworks
in Ebbw Vale.

The firm has been selected by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council and
the Welsh Assembly Government to advise on the regeneration of the site
that once housed the largest steelworks in Europe at its height during
the inter war years.

The decline of the steel and coal industries led to the closure of the
steelworks with demolition on the site in 2003.

The Savills team will be helping to prepare a master plan to turn the
site into a mixed used development focused on a learning campus,
hospital, residential, employment and community uses.

An important element will be the inclusion of new and sustainable
transport links within the site itself and to Ebbw Vale town centre and
the surrounding area.

The development team will be assessing the potential mix, scale and
type of use for future development, drawing up a disposal strategy and
marketing and negotiating the sale of plots.

The planning team will be advising on planning strategy and public
consultation and will guide the master plan through the planning
process.

Tina Taylor, associate director of Savills Bristol development team
said, "The scale and history of this site makes this an important
project that has the potential to play a major role in the regeneration
of the town and surrounding area."

Carolyn Puddicombe, director and head of planning at Savills Bristol
office, said, "The key is to secure certainty in terms of planning and
we are working with the council on the masterplan and planning
strategy."

Savills' Bristol development and planning teams are handling a number
of high profile projects in Wales including the SA1 Swansea waterfront
and old town dock in Newport.
