On Friday 28th Tredegar Town Band peformed at Ebbw Vale Leisure Centre
at a concert in aid of Blaenau Gwent Mayor's Charity Appeal in front of
a packed audience and a packed stage - the mass ranks of Abertillery,
Beaufort, Cwm and Ebbw Vale Male Voice choirs. The band and choirs were
conducted by Steve Pritchard-Jones who did sterling work directing so
many.
Mixed programme
The band played a mixed programme that included T J Powells Castel
Caerffili March, Goff Richards' Pastorale, and Alan Catherall's
arrangement of Mick Jagger's Ruby Tuesday. The appreciative audience
were also treated to a virtuoso performance of the Trombone solo the
Bluebells of Scotland played by Jonathan Pippen.
There was small change to the published programme, instead of Finale -
Symphony No 3 Organ by Camille Saint-Saens they played as the final
offering Paraphrase: Men of Harlech from Welsh Rhapsody by Edward
German in memory of Blaenau Gwent's well respected MP and Assembly
member Peter Law.
Tredegar Band will remember him fondly as an active friend and
supporter. The band chose the resounding sounds of the Men of Harlech,
a tune that will ever be synonymous with the courage and fighting
spirit that distinguished Peter Law right to the end.
The band also provided the backing for a number of choral peices
including such Male Voice Choir favourites as the Soldiers' chorus,
Speed your Journey and Comrades in Arms.
New signings
The concert saw the first public perfomance with Tredegar of cornet
player, Chris Hughes a recent signing from Markham Band and Jonathan
Whatley who also plays cornet.
Lee Drew presently a student at the Welsh College of Music and Drama
has also joined the band on 2nd Horn.
