A scheme which builds links between youngsters and their community in a
bid to cut crime has earned high praise from the Home Office.

Leila Wyburn and Martin Bewick, who are studying for the Youth and
Community Studies degree at the University of Wales, Newport, were
nominated for the Diversity in Action Award in London at the annual
National Police Gala Awards.

The students, working with the police in Brynmawr and the NCH Family
Centre in Winchestown, Ebbw Vale, have helped build up links with local
children and young people.

It is estimated that as a result crime in the area has reduced by 48
per cent.
