Hi,
My name is Bill Robinson, and I am the owne of a Ebbtide 36, named JENAIN. I had her (round bilged) hull built in Cape Town, South Africa in 1992, and launched her in 1996. Since then, I have lived aboard full time and covered about 80000 nm., some 7000 of them as a singlehander. I have done many modifications and improvements to this great yacht, all to minor items, as the basic design is just such a good cruising yacht. I am currently in South East Asia, and planning my next voyage. I did contribute some articles and photos to the Ebbtide Owners Blogspot, but this is now totally inactive. I would like to remain in contact with other owners or people interested in these great yachts.

Hi Bill,
I'm Chris Bradbury I own Moontide a 33ft Ebbtide I built her in Exeter and launched her in the Exeter Canal in 2002. Since then she has covered some 20,000 miles. At present she is on the quay in the Exeter City Canal Basin under going a refit. The plan is to sail off next year as I will be fully retired and so will my lady.
I live on board and have done since she was launched.
There is another 33ft Ebbtide being built here in the basin as I write this email I can hear Steve working on her, He has nearly finished all the welding.
I have come across several Ebbtides over the last few years, the strangest encounter was with Shamsuddin a 33footer we met some 20miles in land on the Guadiana River.

All the best,

Chris.

Hi Chris,
Thank you for your very prompt email, how active is the group? Is there a list of the subscribers?

How extensive is your refit? If possible, I advise you to eliminate or minimize any holes through the deck and cabin top. On my last haul out, I got rid of more than 150 holes and this has made a big difference to maintenance. Eliminating or minimizing any wood in contact with the steel is also beneficial.

My interest is to share ideas, and perhaps help new builders/owners to avoid the mistakes that I have made!   I was fortunate to meet Alan Pape in Cornwall, and also to have Dudley Dix supervise and advise the hull/deck building process. Dudley Dix and Ankon Metal yachts, suggested some modifications to the toe rail, the stanchion bases and the rudder that have been really important. Jenain started out very basic, no furler, no instruments, paraffin lighting etc. Over the years, she has moved more high tech, but is still relatively simple. I have recently fitted a larger engine,(a Beta 50) to replace the original Perkins Perama 35, an electric anchor windlass and I also made a hard dodger. I must be getting soft!

I had seriously considered  building my own hull and deck, but as I wanted a round bilged vessel, I decided to have it professionally done. It only took 8 weeks and was well done. I have seen very few Ebbtides in my 16 years of cruising, but a Finnish friend of mine,  Antero Jarvinen, owns Tikki, one of the nicest 33s that I have seen. I have some very nice photos of Tikki, and of course, many of Jenain. If you would like to see any of them, just ask.

           Kind Regards,
                               Bill.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the mail and the photo of Moontide. It is a bit of a pity that no Ebbtide Owners Association exists. I contributed a bit to the Ellen Landrum's site, but there has been nothing there for a few years now. You are the only one who has responded from the Ebbtide googlegroup. I looked up the Exeter basin on MaxSea, to see where you are, the water looks a bit thin from there to the ocean, but I suppose at high tide it is OK.

I have been through a few  fridge installations myself. I started out with an engine driven, holdover plate system, using a Sanden compressor. This was powerful and worked very well, requiring about 1 hr of running time, every two days. But, like most engine driven systems, it was unreliable due to it's uncanny ability to leak!  Eventually the inevitable happened, and the condenser corroded, allowing salt water into the system, and that was that. Fortunately I also had a 12 Volt  Danfoss system in operation at the same time. I then did a lot of inter- net research, which led me to the Ozefridge. This is a very compact  Australian built system, also utilizing the Danfoss compressor, a holdover plate etc, but the clever bit is the condenser, which is water cooled (by recirculating fresh water from the yacht's water tank), and/or air cooled. It works a treat. I also modified my original " home made 12 V system, by changing it from a salt water cooled condenser to an air cooled one. I now have two good systems (in the same 90 Liter box). A bit of insurance there, but refrigeration is very nice to have in the tropics. I have the controller set for -2 C to -12 C, so the bottom of the box is virtually a freezer. To power this, I have a KISS wind generator, and a single 120 Watt solar panel. During my last 4 month stay in Chagos, I never needed to run the engine at all. I have a 100 amp alternator with a Balmar regulator, and 4x 6 Volt  225 Amp hr golf cart batteries.

I also built a steel rudder, I used 6mm for the forward section, 2mm (with ribs) for the sides , and 5mm 316 SS for the tiller box portion. It survived a 5 hour pounding on a coral reef in Madagascar, which would have destroyed a wooden rudder. It is still heavy, but it does float.

I cook with paraffin , using a Taylors 030 stove. The heater is also a Taylors in which I also use paraffin as it burns cleaner than diesel. I like the idea of a solid fuel stove, but carrying the fuel is a problem. I built Jenain with the idea of one day going down to the Antarctic. She has 50mm of foam insulation sprayed on, a 6mm plywood inner liner, and is set up for double glazing. This makes her easy to keep warm, but also cool in the tropics!

I had a Sunbrella spray hood, but after recovering it a few times, I got seduced by the idea of a hard dodger. I built mine using grp with a honeycomb pvc core. It is very strong, light, and practical. It attaches with 6 x 8mm SS bolts, and can easily be removed, as I had to do when I fitted  the new Beta 50.

When it is impossible to avoid bolting fittings to the deck, I use tuffnol sheeting, bedded with Sika  between the fitting and the deck. This works well as you get two layers of bedding between the fitting and the deck. It is also important not to squeeze the Sika out before it has cured.

Attatched are a few photos of Jenain, if there is anything specific you would like to see, just ask as I probably have photos available.

Hi Guys, I started this group a while ago then promptly forgot all
about it! :) Sum total of three members. I liveabord a 33' .
currently in London working to top up the cruising kitty before
heading off again next year.
Thanks for taking the time to upload a few pics, Bill, a hard dodger
is something on the rather long list of things to do, though I was
thinking of something smaller with a steel frame, but yours does look
rather good...
Next major purchase will be a beta 38 to replace the underpowered
elderly bukh 20. Being able to motor to windward in more than the
lightest of breeze will be nice.

Not sure if this works but a load of pics here -
http://www.facebook.com/paddy.burnside?sk=photos if you can get in.

Cheers

Paddy - Conachair

Hi Paddy,
Where are you off to next year? I'm planning to cross Biscay June/July next year heading for the Guadiana river. I have the Beta 37.5HP engine, I can't sing it's praise's high enough.
Chris.

Hi Chris,   Glad you like the beta :) I've been engineless before, not much fun.     Plans change by the minute but I'm considering a bit of higher latitude first, maybe a trip up to the Faroes,  then SOUTH!!   Maybe stop off on the Algarve, I've been up the Guadiana before - nice!   Never been too interested in the Med so probably be off across the atlantic again.   Is your boat ready then?   my to do list is always huge, though bit chilly to be painting this weather. Built a low power computer from bits off ebay and got that working over the weekend, another bit ticked off :)   Have you been offshore much on your Ebbtide?  I spent a few years drifting round the Atlantic,  great offshore boat!  Will look into better light wind sails for next time.

ENjoy

Paddy

Hi Paddy,
I've taken Moontide to the Caribbean twice since her launch in 2002. She has looked after me though some nasty weather. I have great faith in her and would not change her. Alan Pape did a good job when he designed the Ebbtide range.
I'm planning to cross the Atlantic again, but this will depend on the new crew as she has never done any long distance sailing.
Moontide is my home so like any home there is always improvements to do and of course there is the wish list.
I'm hoping to build a new working jib, but in double thickness so that I can open it up for down wind sailing.
I am using a 10" computer as it can run for six hours on the battery. As to building one I'll leave that to the clever people!!

All the best,

Chris.
