Extending Paths, Remove Brush

How do you extend a path? It seems the only way is to add a vertex and keep adding vertexes by one, or to make a new path and weld the two. In other apps,  you can click (or cmd click) on the end point, select the path tool, and extend the path. Very helpful when you have a long path and you have to keep shifting the view and move around the drawing.

How do you get rid of a brush? There appears not to be a "none" option.
