I'm certainly no artist, but I had an idea this morning for a logo to
represent EAUT (assuming we even need one).

And this needs a logo, why?

because every specification needs a logo, a new foundation, and to
write their own open source license!

I'm not sure that it does, but I do recall talking about it in UI
discussion we had in Tulsa. Anyway, in case it does, here's something
that could possibly work... or not.

Actually, I kind of like it... one of the things I do worry about with EAUT + OpenID is how we indicate to people that they can use EITHER URLs OR email addresses as identifiers in a given box... the OpenID logo apparently means nothing to people (based on Yahoo usability studies) so maybe we can keep using the OpenID logo, but we do need to indicate which boxes support which kind of identifier...

A simple logo would be: @url or e@url (as in, email to url).

I like the logo idea too - I agree with chris that some sort of small icon that would indicate an openid box can accept email addresses would be useful - sort of like the way my browser indicates a page has an associated rss feed.  We could add an example on eaut.org (e.g., an image with a javascript popup that briefly explains how to use an email address as an openid) - if it catches on, it could be a good way to evangelize the idea as people see the icon at various rp's.

So, who's going to actually turn the pencil drawing into a real icon?  :)

I definitely see the reasoning behind this, but I'm actually going to urge a bit of caution on this. OpenID UI relies very heavily on the logo and I would be very happy if no consumer ever knew the term eaut. I think promoting a logo might encourage laziness.

Maybe not, though.

Basically, I think we should figure out how we want this presented exactly before we move forward.

I agree -- and I'd like to hold off on pushing a logo for the moment, since that kind of stuff can get contentious. Code is much more objective than design.

What I'd recommend is pushing a signin box like Basecamp's as the standard we think people should use generally:

The major shift is that the example includes an email address. I think we simply have to push this forward and get consumers to be more specific about the kinds of identifiers they accept...

I agree with Michael and Chris about use of the logo on forms. After
all, surely the entire point of EAUT is that the process is
transparent to the user?

If, however, we want the logo for the developer and organisational
evangelism, I've got a few friends who'll probably oblige us with a
hot rendering.

yeah, may be worth using just on eaut.org for now.

I agree that stacking 2 logos onto the OpenID signup form would cause
confusion. I liked the mockup, I've used it to update Ma.gnolia to
reflect EUAT support:

I was thinking I might take a crack at tidying up the website this
weekend anyway, so I'll see what I can do :)

If you've got friends who can spare a crack at a *simple* logo, I'd be happy to take a look, but this group shouldn't devolve into being focused on such things, IMO. ;)

Not at all. I sent a couple of emails, pointing to this thread with a brief explanation. If someone can spare us the time, then awesome. Otherwise, we'll do fine without it.

The folks I pinged about the logo were all busy over the weekend. Must
have lives or something....

I'm another story, though, so I did some tidying up of the website.
Nothing drastic and I'm not fixated on the design, so feel free to
critique.

I posted the code to Github so you can see the changes etc:
http://github.com/lachlanhardy/eaut/

It looks a little like this:

The 'Code' link shows the highlight colour.

Hope this works for ya'll. Let me know.

Looks good to me....(though, see my last messages for what that's worth).

Thanks, David. I'm no visual designer either. That's why I like to
keep it pretty simple!
