Hi Mamas,

How is everybody doing? I hope you are all enjoying this stage of cuteness as our little ones are learning all kinds of amazing things.

I just wanted to share that we are having tremendous success using a 'Gold Star' system here.

It started because I came to an impasse with Alex over the usual something stupid. He wanted one thing and i was not going to bend over backwards to accommodate his request. So things ended the only way they could- with an epic double tantrum (me and him). Poor Alex.

I asked his school administrator for advice and she understood the situation and provided examples of her own stalemate situations with her kids. And in the end, she emphasized that a 3.5 year old kid still lacks some development and will have difficulty with impulse control.

So fast forward and we were butting heads about something else and I blurted out to Alex that he would get a gold star each time he listened to me on the first request.

One of the first things I rewarded him for was getting ready for bathtime in the evening when he obliged after my asking him only once. Two weeks later he still eagerly runs upstairs to get ready for bathtime even though he doesn't get gold stars every time.

For the dog people... Intermittent positive rewards have been proven to be the most effective training method...

Especially when it's so easy to slip into the negative "don't steal toys from baby" "don't do this/that to baby"... Etc... It's nice to have a positive reward system that actually works for us.

The stars are virtual... We just keep count in our head. And when he gets to 10 he can trade it for a treat... Chocolate ice cream, for example.

I wonder if I can train mike , my partner, with frozen cookies (his favorite)....
