This week, a new RMI analysis shows the critical climate implications of the EU’s short-term choices in sourcing alternatives to Russian gas. Also: a call for more transparency around utilities disconnecting their customers for unpaid bills during the pandemic and other periods of economic instability.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has already incurred a devastating human cost. The crisis has also disrupted the energy sector, with Europe racing to replace Russian natural gas. An RMI analysis reveals that how European nations replace that fuel will have major climate impacts, given widely varying supply chain emissions for alternate energy sources (see “Chart of the Week,”

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of Americans were unable to pay their energy bills, leading utilities to shut off many households. These curtailments hit communities of color disproportionately, according to the limited data available. A new article shows the need for more transparency to illuminate inequitable practices and protect households from being trapped in the energy-poverty cycle.

Without focused policy to help get electric vehicles into low- and moderate-income communities, we risk leaving these communities behind in the transition to cleaner, quieter vehicles. In a new feasibility study for utility regulators in Connecticut, RMI shows how EVs and innovative business models can help address many legacy problems in transportation access — in Connecticut and other states as well.
